Where does it actually state new JETS?

Theres plenty of Typhoons just a few hundred yards away that would do the job at a fraction of the cost! :D

Unfortunately although there enough two seater Typhoons (you need two seaters to carry the circus) at Shawbury the cost of operating Typhoons would be prohibitive. I can't remember the exact costs but it's something like £6k a hour for a hawk and £30k per hour for a Typhoon. If they went for Typhoon then I think you would see a vastly reduced formation

Well the BBC got a little ahead of itself......

What Typhoon T.3s at Shawbury, last time I looked at Milkys list they are all firmly somewhere in Lincolnshire..

Still Dream on

I've just re-read my post - and I think I must have been smoking something that day that I shouldn't have!

I meant to type ""TUCANOS" - unless predictive text got the better of me....!

If they used Tucano's they'd have to change from the Red Arrows to the Red Crosses

It's all just political expectation setting, we all know what the replacement aircraft will be. The recent news article just said that the government is going to review replacement options. If the headlines the next day were about the "Reds getting new multi-million pound jets while nurses are starting to have to use food banks", then some creative handling would be needed over the next couple of years to make it look as though industry were paying and the taxpayer was getting a freebie. I suspect the timing of the announcement while they were on a "trade" visit to the Far East was far from a coincidence.

Tucanos wouldn't have enough airframe life left to fly as display aircraft. I'm going to guess on Hawk T2's!

And what would be wrong with that ? The RAF already have a budget for the solo Typhoon display. By disbanding the Red Arrows you save twelve aircraft, ten pilots, 50+(?) ground crew. The replacement cost would be four additional pilots and their aircraft to create a new RAF formation display flight. Guess you would want more aircraft in team corrects so as to provide a flying display of five aircraft. What seems to be forgotten by those who demand nine red Hawk T2's is that by the time these replacements happen there will be even few places and events to display at. The solo aircraft will still be the primary display with the full team only being seen occasionally for major public, political or Royal events. The solo display pilot will require the majority of the flying hours to maintain currency, the other four team pilots will still require special training flights but could also have standard squadron duties. This squadron could also take over some of the tasks currently undertaken by 100sqn Hawk T1. Obviously if two seat Typhoons are available from storage then this would help with the 100sqn FAC role, the solo display could still a single seater. The cost and need for a dictated team of ground crew would be reduced by the Typhoon being within the standard servicing pool. The only difficult question would be where to base this display flight, Coningsby would be the obvious choice but airspace for display practise could be a problem, Lossimouth would be a bad choice for transit flights to display locations, really only left with Leeming but if RAF is going to get the addition two 'fighter only Typhoon squadrons as promised that might yet become an operation base once more.

Hawk T1s for at least the next 10 years - probably longer.

This may be a way forward.

It would not be necessary to install non-essential weapon systems. A joint production with Bae, aren't they developing a new wing for the Hawk?

Buy British built gear, keep the work here in the UK.

Wishful thinking here, but I would love to see the Reds in a "mixed formation" of perhaps 7x Hawks and 2x Typhoons. The display would be similar as that of today, but the "solo pair" would consist of the Typhoons.....in that way you get a more dynamic display, with the Hawks doing the formation bits and the Typhoons providing the raw power bits in between.

Trouble is the Combat Hawk is built in India, under Licence from BAE.

Hawk T2 is by far & away the sensible choice, it is after all the only fast jet that fits the bill at a reasonable cost.

Wonder if they've considered the M.346 Master unless they're too Italian and European?

Indeed, the chances of the Reds flying anything other than a Hawk is zero!?
