The Kuznetsov is not nuclear powered.

She certainly is smoking! :D No MiG-29Ks on deck but they have put on show a Ka-52K Hokum.

Clip I saw on BBC news website had a pair of Sukhois parked at the base of the ramp and one by the tower. Is that amount of smoke normal for a ship? Bit of a give away I'd have thought to any other ships or aircraft just over the horizon.
In this world there's two kinds of people, my friend. Those with loaded guns, and those who dig. You dig.

Stealthy she ain't.

Or maybe it's a Russian plot to deploy Chemtrails.

It never looks good when the smoke out paces the ship!

The smoke is apparently due to the heavy type of furnace oil that they use.
Always seeing it quite smoky.
Russians use Mazut, an heavy type of furnace oil for their Steam engines as they do with their distintive district heating implants.

They're only a third of the way down along the Spanish coast currently, have they been moving very slowly at 10-11kts most of the way.. or is this normal?

Moving at the pace of the slowest ship.. the smoking carrier?

Hi Stroudy
Were are you getting this info from? Is it from one of the vessel finding sites? Or somewhere else.
I would like to keep an eye on this lot? :ninja:
Thanks
Kev

It's not a well ship, apparently, and certainly can't steam at full speed.

It'd be very embarrassing for them if it didn't make it to the Med.

As an ex Portsmouth lad who's father was a Chief Petty Officer Stoker, he would tell me that if his old ships,1938 and on ,made smoke like that there would be hell to pay!

The Northern Fleet tanker Osipov is another one to monitor on AIS. Osipov is south of the Tug Nikolay Chiker.

Usually one of the support vessels in the task force sends regular Morse Code weather messages with full lat and long. They have been very scarce on this deployment or are using unknown frequencies.

The Kuznetsov checks in now and again with HQ Northern Fleet using Morse. Audio of comms check with HQ Northern Fleet (RIT) on the 22nd Oct. The carrier is call sign RHY73.

Has the smoke disappeared from the horizon yet :P

On a more serious note, if she makes that much smoke how on earth are the pilots able to see her to land ? Also if she's that poorly & unable to run any faster how do they generate enough wind over the deck for air ops ?

With all that smoke belching out she can only be powered by a VW engine  :P  .

And there's plenty more where that came from!

Russian Navy Tug Nikolay Chiker was noted sending a Morse weather message during 12Z back to HQ Northern Fleet. It is just standard international weather and includes the lat long, heading and speed.
