Red Arrow down Bournemouth 2011
Re: Red Arrow down Bournemouth 2011
There's an article in todays B/mth Echo about it:
http://www.bournemouthecho.co.uk/news/9 ... must_stop/
I don't really have a problem with people visiting the site as such
a) it's open land that's used by walkers anyway
b) it's human nature to be curious and some people just go along to pay their respects
I do have a problem with souvenir hunters though, which isn't on.
I'm often walking the dog in that area by the river, however I still haven't gone to the actual crash site yet.

Re: Red Arrow down Bournemouth 2011
I don't think some people stop to think! The little [or big for that matter] of debris they collect may be the missing vital piece that fills the jigsaw, but they just think it's a little souvenir or worse, see a well known auction site £££££ signs.
Re: Red Arrow down Bournemouth 2011
Possibly, but the site was sealed for six days while the investigation teams were collecting debris. Surely they must have felt they had all they needed to then allow the site to be opened to the public again?Mayfly wrote:The little [or big for that matter] of debris they collect may be the missing vital piece that fills the jigsaw
Re: Red Arrow down Bournemouth 2011
I'm in agreement with Hurn there, surely if the accident investigation team have done their work, then any thing left (Of which I doubt there will be any , anyway !!) will be something that isn't needed. However I do think it a bit macabre to want to collect any of it.
Re: Red Arrow down Bournemouth 2011
Also sick that people have been posing for photos with what they found.
Re: Red Arrow down Bournemouth 2011
Same thing happened in 2003 when Space Shuttle Columbia (OV-102) was lost on re entry. Within hours if not sooner debris was up on the famous auction siteMayfly wrote:I don't think some people stop to think! Re: Red Arrow down Bournemouth 2011
The Reds crash site was sealed off in minutes, so I don't think much if anything was taken at that point. It's only since the area has been opened up again that it seems to have attracted some souvenir hunters.Gary wrote:Same thing happened in 2003 when Space Shuttle Columbia (OV-102) was lost on re entry. Have read some reports of people going onto private land to find bits though, which is obviously trespassing.
Re: Red Arrow down Bournemouth 2011
Not everyone that visits the site is a ghoulish souvenir hunter it seems.

Re: Red Arrow down Bournemouth 2011
If there is anything left then thats pretty poor from the MOD I'd say. Its fairly obvious that if things are left behind they will be taken, so the MOD should have sought to ensure nothing remained, so the remnants cant be flaunted.beefsteak wrote:I'm in agreement with Hurn there, surely if the accident investigation team have done their work, then any thing left (Of which I doubt there will be any , anyway !!) will be something that isn't needed. Re: Red Arrow down Bournemouth 2011
BBC reporting that the Reds are resuming public displays. Does anyone know if this is the full schedule again or only a limited number of displays?
I'm for Portrush at the weekend all being well and the news was that they definitely were not appearing. BBC reporting tonight that they are coming.
Anyone know the real story?

Re: Red Arrow down Bournemouth 2011
They will not be at Portrush. The BBC is reporting incorrect info.
Re: Red Arrow down Bournemouth 2011
So are they only doing a limited number of events then?

Re: Red Arrow down Bournemouth 2011
Taken from the Chatsworth Country Fair website,
UPDATE 1 SEPTEMBER 2011, 15.OO pm
A statement just issued by the MOD includes the following
Squadron Leader Ben Murphy, Red 1, said:
“Jon, as a Red Arrows pilot, encapsulated everything that is the 'Best of British'; he was an exceptional pilot and a dedicated RAF Officer who saw service for his country but, moreover, he was a selfless and compassionate friend who will be sorely missed. The fortitude, resilience and pride that Jon showed in life are exactly the qualities that define our Armed Forces and it is these that will enable us to get back on our feet and move on. For that reason, and in Jon's memory, the Red Arrows will recommence flying displays to the public on the 2 September."
Not long since seen this so i would assume they would bw honouring the rest of thier displays this season, although i could be mistaken.
Paul.

Re: Red Arrow down Bournemouth 2011
Linton On Ouse and Chatsworth tomorrow is confirmed. But some others the BBC names are cancelled. Remember the BBC do not know all details about upcoming displays only the organisers and RAFAT can give confirmation.
Re: Red Arrow down Bournemouth 2011
Just found this on the BBC website: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-dorset-14731599
If it's true then how the heck did they miss that?"Another gentleman had an item of wreckage about 12 to 18 inches long and five to six inches wide, what looked like a fuel injector and a bit of glass.
Re: Red Arrow down Bournemouth 2011
I repeat , there is no Reds activity this weekend, the funeral of "The Eggman " is on Saturday , and there is no flying on Sunday out of respect !
Re: Red Arrow down Bournemouth 2011
Good to see them back up again today. Next display at Guernsey/Jersey on Thursday.

Re: Red Arrow down Bournemouth 2011
Yes it was confirmed that XX179 was the aircraft that crashed. It was originally assigned to Red 5 but they rotate the aircraft around between pilots during the display season.
XX308 can be seen leaving Hurn here the weekend after the accident.

Is that right? - I didn't know that. All a/c handle a little differently so I assumed they would only change either for reasons of servicing or when they need to use the spare.
