Thanks jindivik - it was your clue about the 'tough box' that immediately made me think of the 129.

If not Miles I'd say it looks like an Airspeed design.

The Miles and Airspeed and Percival aircrafts were this aircrafts main competitors when the military were looking for a trainer. it was flown from a airfield with the same name and was assessed at the A&AEE IN 1938, CFS in 1939 and the RAE in 1940, before being retired to Raf Locking as instructional airframe in late 1940, now that should give it away.
