Oh, I forgot about the rumoured 6 or 7 Mk22/24 Spitfires in the 'middle east' along with some crated Griffons, in a part of the world it'd be inadvisable to visit right now. And a complete Stirling in a Norwegian fjord, I was told RNoAF know it's exact location and condition having sent divers down to inspect it. Anyone read 'War In a Stringbag' by Charles Lamb ? I wonder if the abandoned Wellington is still hidden at the secret airfield in the mountains in Albania or if the Germans found it and destryoed it ?
In this world there's two kinds of people, my friend. Those with loaded guns, and those who dig. You dig.

Pretty sure the Americans buried plenty of aircraft at Merryfield , worked there for a while, and I'm sure its mentioned on the history boards in the Tower. not sure if they were boxed or destroyed though!

Very interesting all this information about buried aircraft, most of it just after WW2. A while back I was told of a location near Elgin where numerous aircraft from Lossiemouth were dumped and covered with earth after the war. This isn't a particularly accessible location but it would be fascinating to know what could be recovered if there was the necessary permissions and finance to do it.

Perhaps rather than mothball the second new Carrier, the MOD should bury it alongside the new Nimrod and F-35. :D

I had heard rumours of various U.S birds buried at Goxhill in North Lincolshire? Would make for a cracking series on Time Team would it not?

Update from the BBC One Show programme.

It was exceptionally short! Steve Boultbee Brooks, of the Boultbee Flight Academy, stated that he has seen the ground scans and that the Spitfires are six metres underground.

A lot of people are having to eat humble pie after the videos of the P-40 were posted on You Tube. It makes you wonder what else is out there? There have been no reports of human remains being found at the P-40 location. Hopefully the Pilot was rescued? The serial will eventually reveal all!

Let's face it, you're not going to invest £500,000 to just dig a 6m hole in the ground! Various reports state they discovered the "hidden treasure" back in February and subsequently dropped a borehole with camera to remark that the "crates" we're in good condition! Surely you would have thought they would have gone the extra mile, or inch or two to see what was in them there crates!

To enlist the support of the PM surely points to the fact that this is not a lump of twisted corroded metal not worth even the value of scrap we're talking about!
Indeed. One also assumes they're going to be slightly ambiguous about precisely what there is, where it is and in what condition, so as to stave off random people turning up on the site and digging things up.

I suppose most have heard the story that there are two lancs allegedly buried at swinderby, well i got talking with a chap and his wife a few months ago and his take on the story of the lancs was the reason they don't want them touched is because they were used in the anthrax tests on gruniard island [ a wellington dropped the weapon on this site]or in the burry estuary near penclawdd in wales [ a blenheim was used to drop a weapon during this test].You never know what the aircraft have been up too, dont forget the axis aircraft that were dumped as well, not all were melted down, due to the vast amount of scrap piling up a large quantity was also buried.

I know Canberra spares and tools were buried in the 60's at Walesby. Apparently 2 days of truck loads worth.
