Just thought that subs might be a sensible option, as there's a real risk that the Rebels could shoot down our aircraft thinking that they were Gaddafi's.

I'd imagine Typhoon's from Coningsby are quite a likely option tbh. They'd have to get complete control of the airspace before looking at ground attack aircraft. Certianly, if its anything like Desert Shield in '91, the first in theatre were F-15Cs and E-3s. After that I imagine the GR4s will follow as some of the resoultion is to halt the advance of Libyan forces with immediate effect I believe.

One thing of interest is where they will be stationed. I can only imagine somewhere like Sigonella or Aviano at a push as Malta is just not large enough to deal with the amount of aircraft I expect their to be deployed.

Would welcome some other thoughts?

Malta will stop neutral and will not station any offensive jets on its soil.Humanitarian yes but no offensive assets.

If you listen to the statement being played on the news. They are all referring to the the Arab nations to take the lead.... Can't see that happening

No.IX(B)Sqn were at Red Flag and they have now been replace by No.31Sqn for the US deployment

Hardly European unity on this: UK, France and Portugal voted for the resolution, Germany abstained (other abs were Russia, China, Brazil and India). Also surprised to see Lebanon voting for.

It all depends what is happening behind the scenes with liaison between NATO and the Arab League? The Arab League have been very pro-No Fly Zone so I can see Algeria with their Su-30s supported by their IL-78 tankers being utilised. The Algerian Su-30MKAs would be an ideal platform to mount combat air patrols.

Back on topic now - Was there not a report recently stating that only a hnadfull of Typhoon Pilots were Air - to Ground Qualified? Could this effect what we send?

Just announced on Sky News. Canada to send aircraft to enforce no-fly zone. Looks like the Hornets are going to be deployed?
