I hear the Irish Fishing Fleet are going to move in to the area. Russian Navy vs Irish Fishing boats - but if it became a drinking competition it could be epic.
I appreciate you are new, but don't you think that's below the belt (racist) to any Irish folk that are forum members?

Re your other point, don't forget some French fishing boats previously jammed up UK ports 100% in a protest!

P
I think it's just a joke. i can't speak for everyone but as someone who's part Irish, I didn't find it offensive. Maybe if I was full Irish I'd be trying to get him cancelled or whatever they do these days!

According to https://www.navalnews.com/naval-news/20 ... -tensions/

It will be in the area of communication cables. So make a lot of noise on the surface whilst divers plug into the Internet?

Iโ€™m paranoid ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ๐Ÿคก๐Ÿ›ฐ
Its not actually the case though - if you plot onto the proper marine charts and look then yes there is one cable in the 50nm x 25nm box but not a junction and no more than that. The scale on the maps used to "highlight" cables is too coarse for any detail

(And if you WERE going to do anything to cables, you'd do it in a place and a time where half the NATO fleet isn't already parked waiting for you)

Having listened today to the Russian Foreign Minister talking to journalists, etc., it would appear that they wished they had not started the crisis.
Interesting comments about the former Russian Empire/Russians living in former USSR territory now independent countries. Should they have Russian passports/ be able to return home to Mother Russia.
Bottom line is they now realise that the result might be Finland and Sweden joining NATO, that the Ukraine is receiving significant international support and might not only stop Russian forces, but threaten the Crimea.
So expect Putin to try to save face as he backs off.

I think you will find NATO, especially the U.S., started to build up forces in the East, long before any recent Russian invasions. By recent I mean 2014, when Russia invaded and subsequently annexed the Crimean Peninsula from Ukraine

Russia is to relocate planned military drills so they take place outside Ireland's Exclusive Economic Zone, the Russian Embassy has confirmed.

Ambassador Yury Filatov said in a statement: "In response to the requests from the Irish government as well as from the Irish South and West Fish Producer's Organisation, the Minister of Defence of the Russian Federation Sergey Shoigu has made a decision, as a gesture of goodwill, to relocate the exercises by the Russian Navy, planned for February 3-8, outside the Irish exclusive economic zone (EEZ), with the aim not to hinder fishing activities by the Irish vessels in the traditional fishing areas."

Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney earlier said Russia would relocate the drills, which had drawn criticism from politicians and members of the fishing community.
In a tweet welcoming the move, Mr Coveney said: "This week I wrote to my counterpart, the Minister of Defence of Russia, to request a reconsideration of naval exercises off the Irish coast.

"This evening I received a letter confirming the Russian exercises will be relocated outside of Ireland's EEZ. I welcome this response."

G. 47. From your posted location you might be an Irish national. If so, why isnโ€™t Eire a member of NATO.?.

Is the new location still anywhere near the transatlantic cables and fibres?

Ireland has always been neutral since the founding of the State. My view is that our Military budget would need a massive increase for Ireland to join NATO and thus a massive increase in taxes. We have a high tax rate as it is and a health service with long waiting lists. From a selfish point of view, I'd love to see Ireland join NATO, so much more interesting mil aircraft to see at Irish airports :)

The old one wasn't.
The new one as far as i can tell hasn't been disclosed in a navigation warning or NOTAM.

What was the basis for the comments in the link posted by C24, and reported elsewhere?

My comment about Crimson February alluded to the film Hunt for Red October, tongue-in-cheek but based upon net surfing months/years ago.
Prior to that i was curious about security for undersea cables, primarily terrorist attacks as they emerged from the sea. It culminated in happening upon the Russian building three vessels of the Yantar class. If you wiki the name it reports sightings in undersea cable junctions.

As they say, reasons in writing!

Some crossed wires (see what I did there?). I was referring to the article you posted from Naval News rather than your thinking on possible events.

The original maps showing cables were just not to scale wires and google maps examples.
When you plotted the actual box onto actual marine charts there was a grand total of one cable in the entire area.

a bit off topic just read Russia/ China issue a joint pledge to take on the west and demand Nato withdraw from eastern Europe.
