I remember speaking to one of the 57th pilots at a Finningley show just after their withdrawal had been announced. The additional fuel they carried compared with standard F15 would make the job much more complicated. They could carry enough fuel to divert to Scotland after their mission was completed. This happened quite regularly due to rapid weather changes in Iceland. He said Nation Guard F15 could fly the mission but would need constant tanker support. He also said F15 was the only aircraft for the job as nobody wanted operate a single engine aircraft in that part of the world.
