King’s Coronation Flypast Info 25th - 27th April & 6th May 2023
Re: King’s Coronation Flypast Info 25th - 27th April & 6th May 2023
The weather aircraft and helicopter will. I’d be surprised if they all got airborne on the off chance of a gap
Re: King’s Coronation Flypast Info 25th - 27th April & 6th May 2023
I seem to think the lead Helicopter formation is due over Buck' Palace at 14:36 BST with the full flypast scheduled to take just 6 minutes! Therefore according to the post by 'Jules50' on the previous page regarding LHR suspending Op's from 14:30 for 12 minutes would seem adequate, as the last formation comprising the Reds should clear Buck Palace at minute 42? (heading direct to Bournemouth)
There does seem to be a route into London through clearer weather east of the City at the allocated time, maybe the exit routes could be modified to suit weather to the west? OR as seems most likely they'll bin-it!
Can't see the BBMF getting out of bed for anything less than good weather. I'm still coming to terms with the RIAT Flypast disappointment when half the RAF were airborne just 20 miles away from Fairford & it was canned!

The C130s were airborne, not sure if anything else was.Nighthawke wrote: ↑Fri May 05, 2023 7:51 pmThe RAF's 75th Flypast was cancelled in 1993 but I can't recall if anything got off the ground. Anyone remember? Absolutely bucketed down.

Not looking good. Rain radar has a huge band of rain moving in from the SW...

Wouldn't the more severe restrictions be associated with flying over urban areas...?
I confess that I can't see its relevance to a flypast over central London today, but could you explain why a Draken display over rural Warwickshire in four week's time is so unlikely...?

Is this just the natural pessimism of a UK-based enthusiast, having a lifetime's experience of the British weather?

Isn't it the cloudbase rather than the rain that is the main issue

The two go together to some extent, but I'd guess the cloudbase may take some time to lift to an acceptable level after the rain stops. And the back edge of the rain band has only just cleared Exeter; at the speed it's moving I'd expect it to clear central London about 2.30 - 3.00 pm, but will take much longer to clear the run-in route.

It's just started raining here at Heathrow. Cloudbase is about 3000ft, visibility is still good.

Re: King’s Coronation Flypast Info 25th - 27th April & 6th May 2023
Notam says 250 - 2000ft, But usually about 1000ft.

On the subject of a possible re-scheduled flypast, has any authoritive commentator or spokesperson actually mentioned such a possibility? My understanding is that the sheer enormity of the task, weaving a major flyfast through the crowded skies of the home counties, means that if it doesn't happen at the appointed time, then it can't happen at all.
Edit: I like the idea of a flyfast, but I think I meant Flypast!

The notam will probably have a period of time attached and when that time is up the notam is clearedSeahornet1 wrote: ↑Sat May 06, 2023 8:14 amOn the subject of a possible re-scheduled flypast, has any authoritive commentator or spokesperson actually mentioned such a possibility? In my memory, this has never been an option for any flypast in recent years.Seahornet1 wrote: ↑Sat May 06, 2023 8:14 amOn the subject of a possible re-scheduled flypast, has any authoritive commentator or spokesperson actually mentioned such a possibility? However the practice events always list a number of alternative dates in the NOTAM, from the date of publication, these are then cancelled after a successful practice has taken place.
I would recommend the book The RAFs centenary flypast by Kevin Garland. It documents the planning and event very well. It conveys the scale of the organisation and months of planning well.

Indeed. The optimists might still suggest that a new Notam could be issued in the next few hours, for a rescheduled flypast at a later time, just as happened in 1953. However, the Notam is just the tiny tip of the iceberg in planning such an event, and what was possible in the empty unregulated skies of the early '50s is no guide as to what could happen today.cat1 wrote: ↑Sat May 06, 2023 8:17 amThe notam will probably have a period of time attached and when that time is up the notam is clearedSeahornet1 wrote: ↑Sat May 06, 2023 8:14 amOn the subject of a possible re-scheduled flypast, has any authoritive commentator or spokesperson actually mentioned such a possibility? Reds should be getting Airborne from Waddo at 1-50 going East to the Hold then down the east coast then inland for flyover the Palace.

Cloud base over London is predicted to be below 900m at 2pm, same as the rally point and the route in.

Well 900m is about 3000ft (2952.76 to be exact) which might mean the clouds are above the NOTAM height but I am not sure where that leaves us!
