Event: RAF Cosford Nightshoot

Post by Threshold.aero » Wed Jan 31, 2018 6:27 pm

What with the Royal Air Force’s centenary being marked with events up and down the country this year, it makes sense for us to get in on the act – we being the organisers of aviation events, after all.

In preparation for their own celebrations in June of this year, the RAF Cosford Air Show team have been busy assembling a selection of aircraft from the past century of RAF history. They’ve very kindly agreed for some of those aircraft (yes, including Black Mike!) to be wheeled out of their hangars for one night!

Proceeds from this event will be donated to the RAF100 Appeal and 238 squadron charitable initiatives.

Yep! I'm definitely gonna take my chances for when the newly repainted ex-CAHC Lightning F.53 (ZF580) gets there after fettling & repaint at St Athan. Can't beat a retro silver based 1970's 74Sqn Tiger scheme....unless of course you were there first time around? ;)
Photographed the rest flying in sunshine anddddd the virtual darkness that is a British Summer!

Hi everyone,

The price, although outside our normal pricing structure (found here: https://www.threshold.aero/about/event-pricing), was agreed after negotiation with the hosts. It's still somewhat cheaper than previous events at the station and we needed to get to a point where they were happy with the amount that would be given to charity, but was as close to our normal prices as possible.

This price isn't going to be a normal thing for Threshold.aero, one of our main aims is reducing the cost of such events.

Hope that helps to explain why it is the price that it is.

£40 per ticket is very competitively priced for the amount of airframes you'll be shooting compared to some other events in the nightshoot world.

I'd attend myself if it wasn't for work commitments.

And while people keep paying over the odds, event holders will keep charging over the odds. Given that the airshow is only £25 with a flying display i'd say this was daylight.... Sorry Moonlight robbery!!

I personally think 'THEY' should be happy with any amount given to charity (charities in this case). Equally, I have yet to meet any Charity that is likely to say..."Nah! That's not enough. Take your measly donation & :grr: stick-it"
Could it be that 'THEY' are totally relying on the attraction of Black Mike to make 'THEIR' way onto the Honours List for next year, after all, pretty much all of the rest on offer have been seen in the light & dark since retirement.
According to the Threshold site they're "containing" (not 'Continuing'??) the Black Theme & gonna road-in a BLACK Hawk, :S Quote..."We await confirmation of the aircraft's identity and colour-scheme."...I'm gonna take a gamble on the colour.:'( Why not a Brawdy or Chivenor retro Scheme! The 22 Sqn Wessex is perhaps the only one I would like to see, but not £40 + travel + overnight costs 'Liking'

Mark, out of interest what would be "the odds" in terms of pricing for an event like this, for you? Not having a go, it's a genuine question as we are enthusiasts too and for us we considered it a valid price (in fact we consider all the prices we set as acceptable for what there is!) Worth remembering though that this is a small event, with professional lighting, not a 60,000+ attendance show.

Personally I think it's quite offensive that you'd even think that :(

Will fix the typo, thank you for spotting that. As there are no Brawdy or Chivenor coloured aircraft left anywhere, we'd need to paint it. Not sure the RAF would let us do that for an event (as much as I'd rather like a camo Hawk!)

£42.40!!! I won't be going for that!! Wow, I'll be asking some of the guys (from Cosford) about that later in the local curry house.

Personally, I feel it should be priced the same as the airshow. I'd love to attend this event, but I can't help feeling we are being shafted for the privilege...

I'm normally a bit of a forum lurker but I have been enticed out of my hole on this one.

I feel the need to defend Threshold on this. I have been an attendee at various 'after dark' events, two of which have been at Cosford, and I have never had so much opportunity (number of airframes) for such a low price. In fact last year alone I paid an additional 25 pounds on top of this asking price for less. You may have your opinions on that and think I'm a fool, but I beg to differ and had a great time whilst taking some of my favourite photographs to date. I feel the need to both congratulate and thank Threshold for bringing us more choice and opportunity in what would otherwise be a declining hobby.

I'm very sad I won't get to make this one but will enjoy the week after at Yeovilton.

All views of course are valid, such is the life of a forum, I just felt the need for a little balance and positivity..otherwise these people may see it as more hassle than it's worth.

Would be happy to pay £40. But can we please have photoshoots in day light, although the lighting rigs may well be useful if the weather is pants. What ever happened to the photodays like Waddington used to host, and before people remind me we have a smaller airforce, aircraft and men/women, and security issues. But if Cosford can go to the trouble of parking aircraft outside why can we not photograph them in day light ?

The event seems to be scheduled to start at 4pm so with sunset at 6pm I guess you get the best of both worlds. The last two I've done at Cosford have begun at 3:30pm and the 'daylight' shots have been very welcome, but it's the transition to night that is the most special*

*usual weather caveat applies!

Are you not allowed out after dark?.

Cheap compared to the Old Warden night shoot on the 13Oct18 - £60 Adult/£55 SVAS.

Over 75% of tickets now sold, proving to be very popular! Thank you everyone who has purchased a ticket in aid of the RAF100 appeal and 238 Squadron's charity initiatives.

Earlier than planned, ticket sales will be closing at midnight tonight to allow us time to get the list to the Military Provost Guard Service.

Single figures left should you still want one - maybe you've realised £40 isn't quite as bad as you first thought? ;)

P.S. If you are going, you should have received an email from us earlier in the week with timings. If you haven't, please get in touch asap!

Well now you lucky boys & girls. This Event will run with Swiss-watch timings according to the Schedule. Please ensure you arrive & park ahead of the published time-slot to allow for double checking your equipment as there's no second thoughts about returning to your 'wheels' later! Allow extra time for emptying Bladder/Bowels (& any pre-event excitable tanking) Once the 10 minute entry slot opens you just won't have time for anything else.
Good Luck & don't be late.... oh! & Hi-Viz ?? ;)

Hi Supra,

Not sure you have bought a ticket? If not, then you've not got the whole picture. As I'm sure our happy customers will be able to attest, we are very laid back, and are more than happy to help people out as required.

If you have bought a ticket, please do re-read the joining instructions - all the information you'll need is there.

Chris
