A-10 from Whiteman set to deploy to Estonia

JACK “MILES” VENTIMIGLIA Editor | 0 comments

Whiteman AFB – Thunderbolt II jets at Whiteman Air Force Base are expected to deploy to support a North Atlantic Treaty Organization ally, Estonia, in the face of Russian aggression, Sen. Roy Blunt said Wednesday.

“It’s exactly what NATO ought to be doing, and (members) probably should be considering even more permanent forward positioning of NATO assets that are now much farther west in Europe than they maybe need to be, with new countries that entered NATO in the last 20 years,” he said.

Under Vladimir Putin, Russia shrugged off diplomatic agreements and world opinion to invade parts of the Ukraine.

Blunt said the A-10s will be on their way “in the next few days” and are expected to stay in Estonia for several weeks.

“It’s part of the forward projection of NATO to send a message, particularly to the Russians, that we intend to support our NATO allies,” he said.

A spokeswoman for the 442nd Fighter Wing at Whiteman, Tech Sgt. Emily Alley, said the A-10s will leave later this month.

“Some of our ops and maintenance guys are going to be in Estonia at the end of this month,” she said. “They are going to be training Baltic and Lithuanian forces on their combat, search and rescue mission.”

Blunt said he visited some of the countries that came under the old Soviet Union’s yoke.

“I was in Lithuania and Latvia before they were allowed to come into NATO, and there’s just a huge desire there to never be left on the wrong side of the line again,” he said. “What this (deployment) does is emphasize that we really do consider the NATO line a line that can’t be crossed, and having that projection of strength into Estonia is good.”

The Russians need to understand NATO values each member country, Blunt said.
“The countries that have become members of NATO are going to be treated as full-fledged members of NATO, and the Russians had better take this seriously,” he said.

NATO consists of 28 member countries. They agree that if a NATO member is attacked, the other NATO counties will provide defense.
Countries formerly under Soviet influence that have joined NATO are Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Bulgaria, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Albania and Croatia.

In addition to the United States, NATO members are Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, United Kingdom, Greece, Turkey, Spain and Germany, which includes East Germany, formerly in the Soviet sphere of influence.

Threads merged rather than having two running.

If that link Sean posted is correct there might be two lots of A-10s coming?

74th FS or 75th FS / 23rd Wing based at Moody and 303rd Fighter Squadron / 442nd OG at Whiteman

US NOTAM issued for a Coronet tomorrow heading Eastbound, right height for A-10s. Could mean the 303rd Fighter Squadron / 442nd OG heading this way. So far no NOTAMs issued for Santa Maria or Shanwick, they could be Island hoping via Iceland. Like the Maryland A-10s did
