Sad news indeed. Thoughts to all involved in this tragic time.

Very sad news indeed. But why oh why does the BBC ALWAYS have to give it the "safety" "old planes" etc routine. Whether true or not they can never ever just say there has been an accident. All they do is set of the dic*heads who know next to nothing about the military. Like the ones i heard talking last night whilst i was out and about. "this shows low level flying isnt worth it" crap like this. Seriously gets me annoyed. Gobbing off before the FULL facts are known. This is a very sad thing to happen but i feel the BBC never helps... :grr:

Totally agree - BBC Scotland's reporting last night was uninformed bile about something they clearly have very little knowledge about. In the direct aftermath of a clearly serious incident with a high probability of loss of life, the BBC reporter decided to home in on the precautionary measure to ground the Lossiemouth fleet, suggesting the incident could have been safety related to the GR4 airframe. Why they just don't stick to the facts, as known at the time, and stop this Daily Mail type reporting is beyond me. It just fuels the uninformed with further nonsense to perpetuate on internet forums. If your blood pressure can stand it, just read some of the inane comments on the Daily Mail article for the accident. I'll not grace it by providing a link - you'll be able to sniff out the cr@p for yourselves, if you really feel the need.

What a terrible tragedy.

This just on the MoD website now:

Group Captain Ian Gale, Station Commander RAF Lossiemouth, has made the following statement:

"Following the incident involving two of our Tornado GR4 aircraft in the Moray Firth yesterday, it is with great sadness that I must confirm the death of one of the crew members, an officer from 15 (Reserve) Squadron, based here at RAF Lossiemouth.

"A second crew member remains under medical care, where he is in a serious but stable condition.

"Two additional personnel remain unaccounted for. Due to extremely poor weather conditions in the area, the RAF and Her Majesty's Coastguard have made a joint decision not to resume search and rescue operations.

"The operation will be resumed as a recovery operation as soon as possible, but we must be realistic: given the length of time that has elapsed since the accident, there is no expectation of recovering missing personnel alive.

"The Royal Air Force is in contact with the next of kin of all those involved. As I am sure you will understand, they have asked for a period of time to take in the news and inform extended family members before further details are released. The Royal Air Force intend to respect this and I would ask the media to do likewise.

"Clearly, this incident will be subject to full investigation, and a Service Inquiry will be led by the Military Aviation Authority. It is important that we establish the facts of what happened and it is vital that the investigation is allowed to take its course.

I dont listen to the news anymore, the guy i saw on sky news yesterday said " the Tornado is a big jet flown by a big engine!!??, and they always practice over the sea as it is safer!"

If low flying is so dangerous there would be accidents a damn sight more often!!!

More likely both with flying at 500mph making the impact at 1000mph. The fact that one has survived is a miracle in itself.
