Aviation rumours, mysteries and folklore

Post by GOOSE » Wed Jan 13, 2010 3:40 pm

We originally covered this topic a couple of years ago.
The posts ran to over 100 and made for excellent reading.
Sadly it was all lost...........
Secret aircraft, haunted airfields, ghostly aviators and military aircraft intercepting UFO's, we had the lot.

Feel free to add your own experiences........the truth is often stranger than fiction.

7 October 2007
------------------

I was getting used to using OpenATC for getting civil airliner registrations which were passing OTT Dundee. I was still quite unused to the whole concept so was paying close attention to radio transmissions as well. Luckily I heard a couple of Tabor / Blue flights approaching.

The first flight, Tabor 41 flight, passed OTT at approx 12.45, in quite a spread formation, trailing nicely. Nothing unusual was observed.

At about 13.30 the second flight of Spangdahlem F-16's came overhead en-route a Red Flag exercise in the USA, they were calling Tabor 51 flight. I was happy to see that one of the F-16's was even hooked into the tanker and shot quite a few poor quality pictures of the tanking.

What caught my eye the most though was a shimmering silver orb tracking the tanker and chicks. I have no way to ascertain the orb's height but it was keeping pace with the formation and I estimate it was slightly lower. I describe the orb as shimmering because it appeared silver but could also have changed colour to blue, red, orange and green?

It was not a conventional winged aircraft or a helicopter. The shimmering was not standard aircraft lighting either.

To the west of my position was a second orb, this one appeared stationary at first but after 45 seconds or so began to track the formation as well. It too had the same appearance as the first.

I remain totally baffled.

Not much of a story but more of info seeking, Ive heard there was the remains of a wellington in the trees at wandlebury near Cambridge. Can anyone shed any light on this :S I was told this many years ago and may not even be true.

But I do know that there are various remains of P-51's and P-47's dotted around Bottisham, lode and Great wilbraham. They sometimes crashed on landing and tacking off. Local farmers are always finding parts of aircraft.

Not much of a story but Ive been wondering about the wandlebury aircraft ever since I was told but I never whent over there to see it, as you were meant to see parts of it in the trees.

A Short Stirling fuselage section was supposed to have been used to form part of an underground culvert that takes water from the drainage dyke alongside NAM’s Southfield site under one of the runways / taxiways on the former RAF Winthorpe site. :ninja:

Any body else with any of their old posts from before , please feel free to re post , as I am sure there are many newbies on here (like me) who would love to read them.

My own strange one (Although I later explained it to my self) concerned a strange light over Stoke on Trent in about 1997. I was new to this area and working as a courier for a firm in Sanbach and got called out to take a parcel 'down south' in the evening, I drove down the M6 (Remarkably quiet (ish) for once) as I passed Keele services I became aware of a strange glow off to my left about a mile away and at about 300 feet high, it appeared to keep pace with me (I later realised it wasn't ,it was just an optical illusion) I wasn't the only one to see it as several other cars were swerving all over the motorway as we tried to avoid folks slowing down to look at it. (There must have been more than one minor bump!!) This continued for a couple of miles, until I was passed junction 15 , I phoned my mum in Nott'm to tell her what I had seen and after the description she told me that a neighbour had seen the same thing the previous night over her way .
It was a couple of months later that it dawned on me that what I had seen was "The Goodyear Blimp" filming for "Sky" TV over the 'Britannia Stadium' which Stoke City had just moved into !!
What my mums neighbour had seen was it over the 'City Ground' as Forest had played a match the night previously !!!
I often wondered why they had stopped using it , I can only assume that it was just a matter of time before the powers that be concidered it a danger to the public !!!

The Goodyear Blimp is tethered to Derby Airfield on Google Earth . The airfield is about 6 miles SW of Derby .

Then there's the story of an airman, dressed in WWII Flying kit, flagging down cars on the Horncastle to Caister Road.

People would stop, alledgedly he would get in and then start to dematerialise into mist as the car began to move............. :ninja: :ninja:
