Re: Nimrod R1 to east Mids tomorrow ?
One assumes that Cosford will eventually get one of the surviving airframes by road. There has been no mention of the proposal to fly one into Shawbury for the museum, for a long time. I have a feeling that this morning's Nimrod flight will be the very last. I can't imagine that there is any will to retain support for one more aircraft, simply to fly it to Kinloss for scrapping. I fear it may well simply languish at Waddington. Time will tell though I guess.

According to my latest intel.....

Correct - it will be in bits thoughSheff wrote:One assumes that Cosford will eventually get one of the surviving airframes by road.

Correct - see aboveSheff wrote:I have a feeling that this morning's Nimrod flight will be the very last.

No support in the plan but now Cosford have decided..... see aboveSheff wrote:I can't imagine that there is any will to retain support for one more aircraft, simply to fly it to Kinloss for scrapping.

Nope - Seems like after today the last one will be broken up at Waddo but any further info and I'll let you know.Sheff wrote:I fear it may well simply languish at Waddington.

Re: Nimrod R1 to east Mids tomorrow ?
Thought flying a Nimrod into Cosford had been scraped due the lenght of runway avaiable. Good news if true, still believe that XV249 should go to Duxford.
Re: Nimrod R1 to east Mids tomorrow ?
Not true, sadly. Runway length is an issue. Technically, there's no reason why a Nimrod couldn't land directly at Cosford but (like the Victor some years back) it seems that Shawbury is the preferred option to allow a good safety margin. But this whole plan seems to have fallen silent weeks ago. I assume that Cosford still expect to get a Nimrod (or do they?) but it seems increasingly likely that it will be delivered by road. As I said before, it seems very unlikely that money would be spent on keeping one aircraft airworthy (and a crew current) just to fly it out in a couple of weeks. One would imagine that if they were planning to do that, they'd be doing it now.
It must be far more likely that one of the Kinloss Nimrods will be transported by road to Cosford. But at least that might give Softbill a chance to save the one that is at Waddington... you can only try!

Hi John
Why not try for the cockpit section of the third one. I know they stripped it but it still might be worth displaying.
Worth a try mate

Why Kemble? That doesn't make any sense. Shawbury is the usual destination for Cosford exhibits. Even more odd - why keep a crew current and keep an aircraft airworthy until the 28th? Why wasn't it shipped-out ages ago?

Re: Nimrod R1 to east Mids tomorrow ?
I believe Kemble was selected on the grounds of cost (related to the team selected for dismantling the airframe). This was offset against the transportation costs from Kemble to Cosford.Sheff wrote:Why Kemble? That doesn't make any sense. Shawbury is the usual destination for Cosford exhibits. Critically observing Pension regulatory activity...

Re: Nimrod R1 to east Mids tomorrow ?
Spend money to get an aircraft to an airfield which is further away from its final destination than the one that it starts-off from. Brilliant.

Route planning - more motorway options from Kemble than there are from Waddington.
Method Statement and Risk Assessment - if the dismantling company is based at Kemble then it's easier to do the work on your own patch than within MoD regulations at Waddington or Shawbury.

Sheff,
As an aside - despite it's past history of aircraft scrapping - Shawbury has an aquifer located beneath the airfield - they are very careful to avoid spills!

The problem Sheff is that you attempt to solve military problems with a logical approach.Sheff wrote:You couldn't make it up, could you?! Oh well, I guess nothing should surprise me these days...
Don't forget to introduce Capt. Tangent to throw things totally askew!

Logic and common sense disappear proportionally the higher up the rank structure/political ladder you arereheat module wrote:The problem Sheff is that you attempt to solve military problems with a logical approach.Sheff wrote:You couldn't make it up, could you?! Hi Folks....
Been to East Midlands today.... You cannot see the Nimrod from the Aeropark Museum,
It is presently sat in the 'West Cargo' area of the airport (Pretty easy to spot from the road)
I spoke to the guys at Aeropark and they said the Nimrod will be moved into their site at the end of July (no specific date yet)
Regards
Ben

I won't complain, Kemble is closer to me than Shawbury so im more likely to get up thereSheff wrote:Why Kemble? That doesn't make any sense. Shawbury is the usual destination for Cosford exhibits.
