Seems strange the older Ks were around 40 odd years, yet the newer Js would be getting tired after just over 20?

Same with them talking about replacing the T2 Hawks sooner rather than later.
MISSING - x1 Air Force.
If found please return to the UK.

Not getting Tired, its a funds saving issue like the 2010 SDSR when it was Tornado or Harrier....

Surely by now you have noticed that they were having issues with the Adour engines with the Hawk T.2s. As for what they actually are and why remains to be seen. Also the RAF took them on whereas all the other MFTS airframes are Owned by the PFI company that runs the MFTS.

There were more than twice the number of Ks than Js, and the life of the Js was rapidly used up with rough field landings in Iraq and Afghanistan, prompting the need for expensive wing box replacements.

Well they didn't keep them and they have been retired, The End . Also, despite the fact they have had the centre wing boxes replaced as they were some of the first C-130Js built. Australia is replacing its similarly older Js also
Yes they sure are but with 24 brand new C-130J's! So not only replacing them with the same proven airframe but doubling their number. I think they chose wisely.

I have a degree of hope that once the latest defence review is complete that we may order a small number ( maybe 6 or so ) new build C-130 aircraft primarily to assist getting special people to difficult places to do discreet tasks. Fingers crossed.
Is that not what the new build (yet to be delivered) CH-47 Extended Range are for?
Not at all. Completely different mission set to the MH-47G and the Chinook is slower, has a lower ceiling, and a lot less capacity. It is still a great helicopter but nowhere near the same capability as the C-130J or MC-130J.

Why?
We have just removed them from the inventory, along with all the support that they required, unless Marshals are going to do it!
More A400's maybe.

Ordering another 6 or more Atlas was discussed before the election....
So if that was to happen which I doubt it will, then they might have 8-9 of 28 serviceable based on the average of 6-7 serviceable out of 22 delivered.

But surely operating both types would have made more sense? Don't the other NATO A400 operators have both types on their fleet..ie Germany, France, Belgium, Turkey etc....
Agree should of kept them and used them for the Special Forces.
