So if there was plenty of life in the airframes why the hell did the RAF (Mod) let them go?

They bought A400 instead.binbrook87 wrote: ↑Sun Dec 01, 2024 8:20 pmSo if there was plenty of life in the airframes why the hell did the RAF (Mod) let them go?
Re: Turkey to buy Ex RAF C 130-C4
France, Germany and Turkey all bought A400s and also operate the C130 because it can do things the A400 can’t! Money saving exercise only!NorvilleRogers wrote: ↑Sun Dec 01, 2024 8:37 pmThey bought A400 instead.binbrook87 wrote: ↑Sun Dec 01, 2024 8:20 pmSo if there was plenty of life in the airframes why the hell did the RAF (Mod) let them go?
Re: Turkey to buy Ex RAF C 130-C4
It was never about the aircraft being EOL, the MoD had procured the A400 and as a cost saving/avoidance measure decided to focus on that fleet and remove the C130.binbrook87 wrote: ↑Sun Dec 01, 2024 8:20 pmSo if there was plenty of life in the airframes why the hell did the RAF (Mod) let them go?

Re: Turkey to buy Ex RAF C 130-C4
But surely operating both types would have made more sense? Don't the other NATO A400 operators have both types on their fleet..ie Germany, France, Belgium, Turkey etc....
Re: Turkey to buy Ex RAF C 130-C4
Belgium retired their Hercs in favour of A400's. Not sure where the Luxembourg one fits in with that, being a non Herc operating nation also.

From an operational flexibility perspective, undoubtedly, and that would be preferable in the ideal world; from a cost perspective, no.binbrook87 wrote: ↑Mon Dec 02, 2024 7:17 pmBut surely operating both types would have made more sense? Well at least they have sold them, and therefor got some money back.
Isn't that better than them rotting away on the ground or scrapping them?
All of which costs money.

Re: Turkey to buy Ex RAF C 130-C4
Should have retained the C-130J, big mistake letting it go.
Re: Turkey to buy Ex RAF C 130-C4
Well they didn't keep them and they have been retired, The End . Also, despite the fact they have had the centre wing boxes replaced as they were some of the first C-130Js built. Australia is replacing its similarly older Js also

The C-130 "SNOOPY" did see a second life as it was reused as the A400 engine flying testbed (for the TP400 engine).memememe wrote: ↑Tue Dec 03, 2024 1:41 pmYeah - RIP SNOOPYjetranger2015 wrote: ↑Tue Dec 03, 2024 11:32 amWell at least they have sold them, and therefor got some money back.

Yet another thread that starts as newsworthy and descends into an MoD-bashing, boo hoo hoo they're gone thread.
Re: Turkey to buy Ex RAF C 130-C4
I have a degree of hope that once the latest defence review is complete that we may order a small number ( maybe 6 or so ) new build C-130 aircraft primarily to assist getting special people to difficult places to do discreet tasks. Fingers crossed.

Why?
We have just removed them from the inventory, along with all the support that they required, unless Marshals are going to do it!
More A400's maybe.

Is that not what the new build (yet to be delivered) CH-47 Extended Range are for?

Ordering another 6 or more Atlas was discussed before the election....
Re: Turkey to buy Ex RAF C 130-C4
What would be useful is getting AAR on the A400, especially with the H47ER on order. Not having to rely on MC-130's for that will be good

They should have never retired the Spitfire, Oh! wait we haventNighthawke wrote: ↑Tue Dec 03, 2024 2:26 pmYet another thread that starts as newsworthy and descends into an MoD-bashing, boo hoo hoo they're gone thread.

The deal with Air Tanker gives them exclusivity over the AAR role for the UK military and this is why the UK does not have any A400's fitted to deliver AAR. There is an exception made for the RC135 as it cannot be refueled by the RAF Voyagers as we chose not to persue the option to fit a boom.
please keep the thread on topic and lets not let it morph into a AAR thread.
