Brize or Benson tomorrow?

Post by Bobling » Sun Oct 13, 2024 3:33 pm

I've got a window of opportunity tomorrow morning to go and stand on a fence line somewhere for a couple of hours before I take my Mother-in-law for a Biopsy. I've never done this before so apologies for sounding like a n00b. She's is Reading (ish) and I am coming from Bristol, so the obvious choices are Brize and Benson. I think Fairford is probably out as there isn't vey much activity once the early morning Dragon Lady flight has headed off.

Brize adds an hour on to my journey, Benson half an hour.

Is it worth it? I'm a fledgling enthusiast so taking serials isn't my thing, rather I'd hope to get a couple of decent photos.

As someone who has spent far too many hours at Benson over the years I’d say Brize. 28 Sqn are due to Valley at somepoint this week so you may get 3 Chinokks leave if lucky, Pumas are few and far between maybe 2 sorties a day. Tutors and the flying club will always be around. May get an odiham chinook in for some circuits or USL but that’ll be it. Brize will have Voyagers, A400s and C17s in and out and often gets chinooks in the circuit if that’s what you’re after.

Cheers, that's really helpful. Given I'll be on a tight clock and probably wont have time to shift position which spot might be best? I think ideally I'd prefer to be under the incoming flight path. Wind looks like it will be coming from the East.

If they're on 07, park at the far end of Milestone Road/The Crescent and take what is shown on Google maps as "Black Bourton Footpath". Follow round to the west till you get to the end of the runway!

Well I made it. As always time evaporated and I only got an hour there. C17 landed just as I was parking up, isn't that always the way? Like when you see your best bird of the day from the car park when you arrive. Then nothing happened for 40 mins when an Atlas and Voyager took off just as I was leaving. Would have preferred to be at the other end for that one 😄

Still a very nice interlude in an otherwise not very pleasant day. Oh the path round to the West End has one section that's about a nine inches deep in water. Managed to keep my feet dry on the in, not on the way out as I ran round the fence to get a good shot of the Voyager! All good fun.
