Typhoon and Reds Grounded

Post by reaper493 » Fri Jul 22, 2022 3:52 pm

Just been shown this, and found it on Twitter.

Royal Air Force
@RoyalAirForce
We have been notified of a technical issue which may affect the safe operation of our ejector seats in Typhoon and @rafredarrows aircraft. We have paused non-essential flying as a temporary safety precaution until the situation is better understood.

Probably discovered a weight related issue after Boris sat in one...

Bearing in mind the previous unfortunate event involving a Red Arrows Hawk, a rather unfortunate comment.

Does highlight the issue in putting all your eggs in one basket.

Different seats in both types Mk16(Typhoon) & Mk10(Hawk), are they not?

Germany grounded its Tornados and Typhoons for the same reason today

That's quite a technology gap affecting Martin Baker seats which are also in F-35 aircraft. Wonder why they're not affected too.

From the RAF Twitter a few minutes ago. It also says Typhoon non essential flights are still grounded.

After further detailed technical investigations, we are pleased to announce that the
@rafredarrows
have been cleared to resume activity immediately.

Question still stands. If they are looking for something that potentially affects seats across generations, why didn't they investigate the F-35 Martin Baker seats, especially as they are a variant of the Mk16 seat that that Typhoon has?

Because they know the details, and we don't, I guess... :P

Could be a seat age thing - F-35 seats will be much newer, maybe

It is not a problem with the actual mechanics of the seat, it is an issue with the cartridges that make it go bang!

Or don’t, as may be the case here…

I suspect the Engineering authority is furnished with all the detail they need and have been able to make an informed Engineering decision as to what part numbers and/or serial numbers are affected.
