Wow; a Vulcan was intercepted over the USS Nimitz, but that was in the 80's.

I've heard the story about the RAF taking the photograph of the U2 from above *but* in the version I was told the sneaky aircraft in question was an Electric Lightning...

Its true ! Exercise " Sky Shield" October 1961 : 4 x Vulcan B2s of 83 sqdn Scampton departed RNAS Lossiemouth on a Northern route , &
4 others from Scampton on a Southern route . The Northern group sent one into US airspace at high level ( the fall guy ? ) while
the other 3 made a successfull deep penetration at low level . Not too sure about the results for the Southern group .
The Lossiemouth aircraft were serials XJ780 XJ781 XJ782 & XJ783 . The Scampton aircraft were probably serials XJ784 XJ823
XJ824 & XJ825 .

There are many 'stories' like that - usually started from RAF crews who weren't expecting to see a U-2 at a regular altitude because it was descending into Akrotiri while they were climbing or cruising at their normal altitude. I have a photo of a Tornado F3 flying inverted alongside a U-2 on its way back to Cyprus, it's all normal.
