RAF Tucano T1 aircraft names

Post by Tanker Ray » Wed Jan 20, 2021 7:13 pm

Hi

Does anyone have a full list, or know where I can get details of, the names that adorned the fuselages of many of the Tucano T1s previously operated by 1 FTS at Linton eg ZF338/Whizzo?

Regards

Many thanks Bluetail, just what I needed. Does anyone have any more? A further one I have seen is ZF339 'Nix Six Primus' , something to do with FW Woolworth I believe?

Interesting that ZF515 carried the name "Argonaut" - as did our Wessex XV729, when it flew with 72 Squadron. We carried a piece in our member's newsletter about how it's use can be traced back to a World War II Spitfire!

Can't remember the reg and can't find my photo but I seem to recall there was one named (the?) Black Horse in deference to a Spitfire bought by people from Lloyds Bank.

One additional aircraft I have photographed to all those listed is-

ZF378 Whizzo MP-W 2007-09-20 at Carlisle.

Look forward to a comprehensive list of all named aircraft.

Further to my note of yesterday regarding named 72 Squadron aircraft.

I list what I believe to be a complete list of 76, not 72, Squadron named Tucano's.

ZF
170 MP-A The Black Prince 02/04/2009, 03/07/2010
172 MP-D Dorothy 04/04/2008, 02/04/2009
269 MP-O Oh-De-Oh 13/09/2011
264 MP-Q Queenie 13/09/2011
239 MP-T Topsy 18/07/2009
338 MP-W Whizzo 13/09/2011, 29/05/2012
378 MP-W Whizzo 02/04/2009

7 aircraft with 6 names - 2 aircraft with the name Whizzo.

I have photographic proof of these on the dates given.

I hope this is of help and any further examples would be of interest.
