Don't do twitter meself, but it'd be a real shame if this is true. His biography is well worth a read.
In this world there's two kinds of people, my friend. Those with loaded guns, and those who dig. You dig.

Not sure he was racist; xenophobic maybe a better description, with a particular penchant for disliking anyone who was born a “limey”!

I remember reading his quote describing America in WW2 " we fought the war for them". No they fought with us!!

Iconic man none the less.

RIP.

Another 'old school guy' gone. I read his book, and every time I went to Oshkosh, 6 times over twelve years, I took it with me hoping to get him to autograph it. He was nearly always there, and although I saw him on most occasions, I was never near enough to ask him.Not a very educated man, but someone who could fly test flight profiles better than anyone else. I no longer have his book, but if |remember it rightly, it started with ' I may not be the best pilot in the world, but I was certainly in the top ten.' He upset many people, full of his own importance and self esteem, but one cannot deny that he was a very brave pioneer. Another of his pet phrases I remember was 'there are two types of pilots. Those who can fly, and those that can't' He could!!.
I seldom post R.I.P, but this time I will. R.I.P Chuck. you will never be forgotten.

Blackcat. I also read his book, and every time in the old days, when I visited Oshkosh 6 times over 12 years, I always took it with me, hoping to get it signed by him. I saw him most times, but was never close enough to get him to do it. A very brave, and particularly brilliant pilot, who, despite his lack of college education, flew better test profiles than everyone else. Unfortunately, he upset many people through his own self importance and held himself in very high esteem. [definitely not one of Jeremy Clarkson's favourite people], but, nevertheless, a brave pioneer gone. He quoted in his book ' There are two types of pilot. Those who can fly, and those who can't' He most definitely could.

I was fortunate enough to see witness him opening the Edwards Airshow in 97, by breaking the sound barrier in an F-15 (his old buddy Bob Hoover flying chase in a 16). A feat he regularly performed every year :thumb:

He had a great life he crammed in so much enough for a dozen people. He should have been on the astronaut programme, but as has been said he rubbed too many people up the wrong way.
I saw him fly a mustang at the Nellis golden air tattoo in1997, Bud Anderson a life long friend flew in another. I read his book many years ago and totally enjoyed it.
