Slightly pedantic correction, the US Army use 5 numbers after the fiscal, so it's actually 03-08003.

Sorry

This aircraft is refered to as 'gate guard'. Is it on display at the main gate or elsewhere on base, indeed is it a display or ground maintainance airframe. Interesting to see it refered to by its US Army serial, why does it not have a RAF or maintainanace serial

I may be wrong, but I think the RAF stopped issueing new 'M' serials a few years back

It never was an RAF aircraft. It was one of three (I think) American Chinooks aquired by the RAF for spares. The other two are in one of the hangars.

Nice photo Rob, is she photographable from 'off base' ? if 'on base' are the guard room happy to allow photographs ? Its not a base I ever bother visiting, except on a base tour many years ago.
Still strange it has no RAF identity, did not think you could fart in the MOD without somebody putting a number on it :)

The location is off base, near the mess. (To the left of the gate). Park in the married quarters on the other side of the road.
If your taking pictures, Odiham MoD Police have asked if we could just let them know on the gate, what we're up to...not that anyone will!

Thanks Rick, always a good idea to ask permission, especially if your going to be granted permission.

Visited there Friday 19th July, went to gate security asked for permission, they were fine about it, while taking pics RAFP drove by and gave a 'thumbs up', i always ask permission first as they dont want buildings in the pics and also its courteous to do so

They were less than helpful with the location of the Whirlwind when I went there ....even though I'm ex RAF myself ....

The Whirlwind is well inside the gate so you’d need to be escorted to it.

I did ask them that but .... no dice ... even with the ex Forces banter .... they were less than helpful when I asked if it were visible from the outside (which it is !)

Whilst this is the official paper serial the data block presentation on arrival from the US was 03-8003.

I've only tried a couple of times to see it from outside but never had any success. Can you say where you saw it from please ?
