RAF Radar Operators 60's & 70's.

Post by Vulcan74 » Sun Apr 07, 2019 1:16 pm

Nowadays when you see a present day film of RAF Radar Operators in atc they operate in bright light conditions, as oppose to operators who in the 60's & 70's worked in darkness. I personally think I would rather work in the dark environment whilst doing that job, rather than bright light.

I guess its something to do with the old radar screens,CRT? and modern Radar synthetically produced on computer screens.Workstation H&S on eye strain requirements regards lighting levels.

Having being a computer operator for 8 hours a day, 5 days a week I can personally say these bright light conditions don't do anyone good.

If you're having problems they should be addressed through the DSE assessment - see here if you're not familiar (but you should be):

Worked in both dark and light ATC radar environments - much prefer light conditions.
