Tonight was indeed a 4-ship formation call sign Venom. 2xTyphoon and 2xTornado. One a/c (not sure which) reported a birdstrike after the flypast but did not declare a PAN and returned to Leuchars. Flypast details for the coming week as follows - and with many thanks to Glamdring on the Transmission 1 forum:

Plan for the rest of the days, all times are UTC/GMT add an hour for BST....

Wed 08 - 1 X Tornado - 2000
Thu 09 - 1 x Typhoon - 2000
Fri 10 - 1 x Typhoon - 2000
Sat 11 - 1 x Typhoon - 1830
Mon 13 - 1 x Hawk - 2000
Tue 14 - 1 x Hawk - 2000
Wed 15 - 2 x Tyhpoon, 2 x Tornado - 2000

Any idea for IDs for the Tornado GR.4s and Typhoons which performed the Flypast for Tuesday 7th August? Also which Squadron were the GR.4s from?

This was posted by Alastair on the Scotavnet forum:

Tonights was 1(F) Sqn Typhoon "FB", 6 Sqn "CY" (maybe CV but looks like Y),
Tornado "098" and "120" (2 Sqn marks)

Any visual confirmation that flypast took place over castle and city on Monday 6 Aug?
I suspect is was cancelled at last minute due to low cloudbase and local squall.
I have a good vantage point and until Monday had a 100% success rate in seeing it going back years.

We had venom 51, 52 and 55 from 6Sqn, i would imagine venom 55 was the spare. And the tornados from Lossie were callsigns venom 53,54 and 56. Again, I presume the spare was venom56.

Regarding the birdstrike which left a couple dents on the fuselage, it was venom 53 which landed safely at Leuchars approx 9.20pm.

Hope this clears up some of the question marks although i couldnt tell you which airframes they used from Leuchars am afraid. That typhoon would have to be either EV(which flew yesterday) or EY if it was the 2 seater. Although EY wasn't in the lineup during the day.

The Typhoon was a single seater, so probably EV (not sure where I got "C" from but it was late on, the original image is a bit dark on camera and my eyes are past it!!)

Thought there was a flypast on Monday, certainly something noisier than the usual Easyjets over Restalrig at 2100

ZK320/EV was the Typhoon at the back of the formation according to Scotavnet, it was definately a single seater (EY is a twin-tub). :)

Flypast definitely took place on Monday evening despite the weather conditions. I eyeballed it crossing Portobello and was listening to chatter on EDI approach. I didnt get the callsign myself but am informed it was Jedi 61

Banshee 1 & 2 overshot Leuchars at 21:15, on SBS as ZG754 & ZA457.

Mark - if you monitor EDI Approach on 121.2 and also EDI Director on 128.975 you'll hear them. They usually use the approach frequency but for some reason they were working the Director one tonight. Normally flypasts run East to West - for the Tattoo the a/c usually arrive and hold over the Bass Rock at North Berwick about 20 mins before the flypast. They begin their run in about 3 mins before due time and hit Portobello at about 30 seconds before time (usually announcing this timing on the radio - so that the Tattoo organisers can hear and prep for the flypast.) The a/c will then route directly over the Castle before usually routing over the EDI overhead and the Bridges. dont hold me to this but certainly thats been my experience of this over the past few years.

Ive found the best place to watch is Calton Hill /Salisbury Crags as you get a pretty good view. Was at Kings road in Portobello on Monday night and it was pretty good too.

Mark
I have had the opposite experience. My post above explains.
Have always seen them except Monday night which was the first time ever. I live between the castle and EDI. I even queried whether they had even fly-past took place over the castle and city that evening because of the weather. There were posts to know they were in the area. Seems like that night the went north/south (Thanks Stu) rather than the usual east/west over Murrayfield stadium. Ordinarily they do not fly over the pypass.
You may not be aware that they take off, hold off East Lothian and land as a pair but invariably only one performs the flypast.
Saw the four-formation on Tuesday, stunning, to be repeated next Wednesday so unless the weather is as bad as Monday's, it look like a trip out to Calton Hill for you rather than me!
Unfortunately one of the four suffered a bird strike. I have this picure of some senior officer down south blowing his top when he found out like a football manager, one of whose star players is injured on international duty. "They were doing what?"
Hope it does not lead to a reduction in the four for Wedneday or the cancellation of the future flypasts for "operation reasons."
Would be interested to know severity of damage, hopefully nil. I believe it was call sign Venom 55 a Lossiemouth Tornado, either 098 or 120 from (2) Sqn and would appreciate hearing from anyone who finds out when they next make an appearance in the skies.
Will post a query on Lossiemouth's area in a few days if nothing shows up. The less attention drawn to it the better methinks.

If you don't want to go into the centre of Edinburgh, you can catch the aircraft from the Western Approach Road, practically opposite Murrayfield Stadium. Aircraft won't be on reheat at this point, but the elevated road offers good views. There's lots of trees around here though, but you can see the aircraft approach over the castle and they are at a reasonable height for photos.

Every flypast I have seen from here, the aircraft tend to follow the railway track to just after Murrayfield, then a slight bank to the Right, out toward the airport, then Forth Bridges.

Can't hurt to stick in any Scottish Mil frequencies as well as Lossie and Leuchars Air to Air.

At the top of this page there is a link to MilScanners. Everything you need should be in there. Flypasts are usually around 9pm.
