Re: Edinburgh military tattoo flypasts 2024
Yahoo, listen to that!!
Re: Edinburgh military tattoo flypasts 2024
Not happy, missed it, just can't believe it. Still a little light and my bad luck.....

Re: Edinburgh military tattoo flypasts 2024
Zg300 was what came up on flight radar
Re: Edinburgh military tattoo flypasts 2024
Definitely ZK300 on the trackers, Mode-S Hex code 43C609 LOSSIE 33
Re: Edinburgh military tattoo flypasts 2024
I know that feeling. Have been there before. You have my sympathy.
Straight over Edinburgh airport, captured on video! Happy as! Just a pity he didn't give the EJ200's a free spin, I could have done with a bit of the afterburner symphony!!! ( Have to wait for Prestwick airshow for that now!)
Well that's PLANE to see!
Re: Edinburgh military tattoo flypasts 2024
Not sure this'll ease your pain but I had an embarrassing fail myself. Only embarrassing as I'm about to share on here as nobody else was in sight at the time.
Had my gear ready the night before and cycled to Queen's Drive before climbing up towards the Crags. I stopped at one of the outcrops before getting to the top as I was a bit tight for time (which inadvertently saved my public embarrassment). Got my EOS R6 out and went to get the 150-600mm from its pouch, only to realise I'd forgotten to put the EF-RF adapter back on it after using it on another lens.

So I was left sitting on the grass, watching the Typhoon go over without being able to capture anything.

I don't know if it was a factor of being a few tens of metres short of the Crags, but it seemed like it flew over at a higher altitude than usual. If so, maybe a consequence of the complaints?

Re: Edinburgh military tattoo flypasts 2024
There was the briefest of afterburner right over the castle (basically like flicking a light switch on and off quickly), but again it feels like it might have been restricted to fend off more complaints.
Re: Edinburgh military tattoo flypasts 2024
Same as last year, every Typhoon through lit them directly over the Esplanade, & back off again before they'd flown the length of the Castle, or just short of Lothian Road if we were lucky. Just long enough for those at the Tattoo to see I suppose. I was stood near the Usher Hall for one of the flypasts last year & the burners were just going off as it went overhead. As an aside, that was the night Hearts were playing at home, it was a Coningsby machine & a friend at the game later commented on the almighty racket it made. Surprisingly, a family member who was in the Cameo Cinema at the same time heard it too, along with most of the cinema goer's - there was a few mutterings of "What the hell was that??" - & that wasn't from the lobby, they heard it from the auditorium! I must be going deaf in my old age because it didn't seem all that loud to me.

You will be thinking that it wasn't loud, because like many of us on this forum, we'll be used to and enjoy the "Afterburner symphony".
As an aside, I'm still going to Edinburgh airport for the rest of the 21:30 flypasts as I reckon they'll fly close to the airport and bank left for the Southbound return to Brize and Waddington.
Well that's PLANE to see!
Re: Edinburgh military tattoo flypasts 2024
Don't get me wrong re my definition of loud - I've heard louder too (Concorde, B1B, Harrier in hover - that last one's probably up for debate though, but to me it's right up there for ear splitting decibles
) & there's no doubt windows were rattled & car alarms set off, as Typhoon does every year. I reckon I'm just surprised it was loud enough to be heard in a cinema auditorium.

Bright, but cloudy & breezy.
Hope that cloudbase is high enough.

Am down in Blackpool for the Airshow, have seen the Red Arrows 3 times now. Last Night arriving at Blackpool Airport while out walking on my first Night down there, then their display this afternoon - their arrival over Blackpool Tower was lovely, as was the sight of the Lancaster as well. Then on the way back to where we are staying they were departing to Edinburgh for the Tattoo Flypast:
Re: Edinburgh military tattoo flypasts 2024
I seem to be jinxed this year.
Got up to the Crags in plenty time, had a friendly chat (as so often, people don't know what's about to happen
), and got my gear ready.
Started shooting as the Reds approached with uncoloured smoke and continued to fire as they banked to port after the Castle.
Looked at the images afterwards and discovered only 21 images had been recorded.
Recording had stopped before they'd even got level with me. Empty v90 cards, 100‰ batteries in the grip but it's as though the buffer was full, which I wouldn't have expected. I was using electronic 1st curtain shutter, but that should allow about 9 seconds at 20fps, and 21 shots (RAW +JPEG) says that wasn't the case, even allowing for tiny focus and exposure adjustments by the camera . Confused and frustrated.

Going by the crowds in Princes Street Gardens, & those lining the railings along Princes Street yesterday, it seems not all are opposed to a little jet noise. Might just be me, but the Reds looked to be flying directly above the railway, as opposed to directly over the Esplanade & then the Castle.
Re: Edinburgh military tattoo flypasts 2024
Well, I well and truly made up for missing the Typhoon last week and actually saw the Red Arrows on Saturday displaying both happened at Blackpool, hopefully will see the remaining Flypasts. I agree with Vandal regarding the crowds viewing the Flypast shows how some (with sense!) still love to see them going over.
Re: Edinburgh military tattoo flypasts 2024
Headed for Joppa for the Arrows, happy to have caught them coming in and over the hill. Going to be a different story tonight, heading to crash gate 6 mound, but will it fly by close enough for me to film?
Well that's PLANE to see!
