I had to call in at St.Clether this morning. As i had to route directly past the museum, i stopped by for a quick look.
Dear old Gannet is undergoing a brush-up.
On my previous visit, 3 or 4 years ago, this Mk.6 Hunter wasn't present.
A couple of other artifacts.

Nice new addition to there collection.
Interesting to note the Hunter is the one that use to live on the little industrial estate near Wellington in somerset.
Had always planned to pop by there to catch it. Guess now I won't have to travel so fare to see it
And reading this.. its only just arrived.

Re: Davidstow 24/7/14
Good find Pete. That explains perfectly how i had no idea it was there.
Re: Davidstow 24/7/14
Malf, that Gannet is lovely, I remember them flying at CU very well, but what is that colour scheme please?, looks really really nice
Re: Davidstow 24/7/14
831NAS markings, Greg. However the underside is a rather lurid shade, so i assume a base-coat.
Re: Davidstow 24/7/14
Thanks Malf, it sure looks great, hey we could use them for Crowsnest, stick a great big radar on them
Re: Davidstow 24/7/14
I think I remember some yellow and black bits on some (and trainer ones I guess with the dayglo, ) plus that one at Flambards, think you or Pete got dome shots of that)
Re: Davidstow 24/7/14
Which is the one pictured! Got moved to Davidstow a few years agoflynavy wrote:plus that one at Flambards

Re: Davidstow 24/7/14
The above Gannet use to be painted in an incorrect all over Black sceam when it first arrived at Flambards. (Guess it was painted to look like a COD..which this machine never was!! And the COD were painted mid night blue. Not black! !) http://www.abpic.co.uk/photo/1326731/
Looks to me like they have tried to repaint it in the wrong shade of duck egg.. A mistake many a model maker has made!! Lol

Thanks Pete, that's a great bit of info
Re: Davidstow 24/7/14
The 849 Squadron Gannets that were on the previous Ark Royal had yellow and black around their propeller centres and also on the tail. I assume this is linked to their squadron emblem.flynavy wrote:I think I remember some yellow and black bits on some (and trainer ones I guess with the dayglo, ) plus that one at Flambards, think you or Pete got dome shots of that)
Re: Davidstow 24/7/14
That only applied to B Flight - which were nicknamed the "Bees". This was the flight on Ark Royal.
A Flight were nicknamed the "Aardvarks".

B flight was on Ark Royal from 1970 to 1978,previously serving on Hermes and Victorious. There were originally five flights A through D along with an HQ.

This reminds me, I must take a visit there soon, want to have a walk around the old airfield and use my imagination of what it was like back in the day........ It's ok to walk all the airfield, is any of it out of bounds does anyone know??

Some of it is on private land certainly but most of the hard surface is on common land, just don't disturb the sheep!ACLVC10 wrote:This reminds me, I must take a visit there soon, want to have a walk around the old airfield and use my imagination of what it was like back in the day........ As for driving around....take care particularly in a car, as there are some big and deep pot holes on the old runways/taixiways. Even a landy needs to be a bit careful ...lol
Also be aware one of the runways can still be used for light/microlight traffic.....
