REQ: Aviano Movements and spotting

Post by Zonan » Wed Jul 03, 2019 8:31 pm

Hello,

from 11 till 16 August I will be in the city of Aviano and I want to visit the base a day or two.
What is spotting like at Aviano? and where do the F-16s fly their missions (as I'm also going into the alps, I can imagine to see them there maybe)?
How often and at what times will they fly?
How much visitors are to be expected?
Any other tips?

Regards, Zonan

Hi Ronan,

I live near Aviano and when I can I go to photograph the F-16s and any visitors.

Currently the 555th Fighter Squadron is in Nellis for the Red Flag and should return later this month so in August the two groups will be both operational.

They never have fixed times but I flew both in the morning and in the afternoon and sometimes even in the evening for the night.

The runway is 05/23, takeoff and landing in 05.

Great location for photographing for both take-offs and landings.

Certainly looking like a fantastic spot, especially with the Alps in the background!
My only concern really, is that a lot of people told me the local police (and the USAF) tend to send you away if you show your lens near the base.
Is this true, or are they very friendly with the spotters?

Anyway, hope to see some nice visits and I always love the F-16s, so no problems there
Looking forward to my visit.
Cheers, Zonan

We agree, the background of the mountains is really beautiful especially with clear days in August but in Italy it is very hot and the haze increases due to the heat.

Avoid coming on August 15th because it is a holiday in Italy and therefore the base is closed.

As for the police, it is true in part, if they see people in front of them (where they take off) they come to do checks but they don't send anyone away, however there are areas where the spotters put themselves and nobody comes to disturb.

Do you know anything about F-15s and CH-47s being present?
Someone posted a log on scramble stating 2 LN F-15s flew and 2 CH-47s of the 1-214th AVN flew as well.

should be 6 LN F-15s, arrived at 12th July.
Do you know if they will still be present mid Agusust?

Unfortunately I don't have much information about it but I know that the F-15E fly together with the 510th spotted also yesterday.

I don't know how much they stay in Aviano but I think they are here because the 555th went to Nellis for the Green Flag.

I see 2 Italian C-27Js coming from Aviano on adsb.
Are they indeed coming from Aviano air base or from another field in the region? They seem to have flown exactly over the runway though

Hi,

I confirm the arrival of the first three planes but I do not know their serials.
