Re: Llanbedr.
Fly Llanbedr operate a few light aircraft from there at the moment and the Ospreys from Mildenhall have used the airfield recently. There is also a fair ammount of motor sport testing taking place.
Re: Llanbedr.
Thanks '10. Just that i heard this airfield mentioned last night in an Ascot routeing comms exchange. Attempted to follow that sortie on scanner but lost it when aircraft went Lon Mil over Wales. Cheers
Re: Llanbedr.
I have heard that RAF C-130's have overshot the airfield in the past but never had it confirmed. That might explain your Ascot callsign?
Re: Llanbedr.
Yes - it was an Albert. I suppose we'll never know now, unless someone who lives nearby saw/heard anything late last night. Cheers.
Re: Llanbedr.
The airfield has many low approaches by C 130s on many days of the week, Friday night we get buzzed by 1 if not 2 C 130s anytime after 21.00 up 02.00, last Wednesday Jackdaw 1 & 2 , made low level approaches. the airfield also have hosted some night exercises with the C 130s landing and of loading troops. Also we get now and again some MC 130s making a appearances at low level normally all approaches or fly pasts are made down the main north to south runway 17/35.
Hope this helps, just give me a shout if you want any more info.
Regards Ian

Re: Llanbedr.
Good stuff Mr J ! Thanks.
(I was beginning to doubt my ears before this post, as I thought Ll. was totally derelict these days.)
In the dark days of '72 I was on Western Radar at Aberporth - on the RAE site.
Saw many Jindivik runs over the bay....with high intensity flares attached, so the cameras could track them.
I saw a time-expired one shot down by a naval missile from the RAE (Seadart/Seaslug ? can't remember).
Saw a few Bloodhounds fired off too....very loud and very fast !!
Cheers.

Hello Tim, How is Chox?, always enjoy reading your fascinating books, do you have any more in the pipeline.sherriff wrote:Yes - it was an Albert. I suppose we'll never know now, unless someone who lives nearby saw/heard anything late last night. Cheers.
Re: Llanbedr.
I have heard that discussions are taking place with landowners at each end of the airfield.
There seems to be plans to use the airfield for UAV activities but a 400 metre wide sterile area is required on the approaches , currently a campsite at the North end and a caravan park at the South end..

Re: Llanbedr.
yes there are plans to test UAVs at Llanbedr, Qinetiq are coming back after 10 years to test and evaluate the UAVs they are at the moment working on the VCR tower and have awarded Safeskys the contract to cover the tower OPS, as for the 400 metre sterile area I have not heard and I own a caravan at the south end, They did perfectly ok when they flew the Firefly, meteor, and Jindivik UAVs, so hopefully they can miss us with the new drones.

Re: Llanbedr.
Over the Easter period this year we hosted the Red Bull team, the pilots Paul Bonhomme and Steve Jones executed perfect flying through the old Meteor Hangar here at Llanbedr, making many passes with smoke on very impressive, the film is well worth a watch on this amazing feat, it is something I witnessed over the three days we hosted them, but had to keep it on the quite until the official release today

Re: Llanbedr.
Had a holiday in Barmouth back in 1984 and drove up past Harlech to Shell Island, spent the afternoon sat on a sand dune overlooking the airfield, great entertainment was had in the shape of a Meteor D.16 and the lovely old de Havilland Dove doing numerous go arounds, also one of my best ever aviation moments as a red and yellow Sea Vixen, no guesses to which foxy bird that was, came over my head at low level and turned onto the approach to land, not forgetting a few Jindiviks wizzing over, fab memories of fab times gone by!
Re: Llanbedr.
The Airfield is slowly getting back to life, with future Drone campaigns and Fly Llanbedr with there flying school and flight experiencing flights to the general public and future pilots, anyway these two video's show what the Airfield was like when operational.
