Reims Air Base Closure?

Post by bigboy » Fri Mar 04, 2011 1:52 pm

Chaps,

Going to France in Mid June, pretty sure Reims AB is closing then? Or has it already close, done a search and I could not really find much.

Thanks

French Air Force is still reducing its military aircraft and base numbers in 2011, the following is planned to occur:

LFQI Cambrai EC01.012 will be deactivated in 2011. EC02.012 was disbanded on 25 June 2009. Cambrai Airfield will be closed in early 2012
.
LFSR Reims ER 01.033 has been disbanded at 24 June 2010.
ER 02.033 will move to Mont-de-Marsan in June, 2011
Reims will be closed accordingly in June/July 2011

LFSX Luxeuil EC02.004 will move to Istres in June 2011 to take over the role of EC03.004
Luxeuil is then expected to close.

LFMI Istres EC03.004 will be disbanded in June 2011, to be replaced by EC02.004
EH05.067 will move to Orange in the summer of 2011

Further to my last, I understand that Reims, is slowly running down its activiries.

while I understand that the dates still remain as final dates, as in most cases crews get posted, aircraft sent for servicing are not returning, so you could already find flying at Reims is already reduced, especially after some Squadrons have allready move/disbanded.

Hi All

Adding to the above posts for Reims, I have a couple of local guys who stay in touch with me and on Thursdays the morning is always quiet as this is the sports period and its also the night allocated to night flying. Fridays is a no flying day from what they have told me.

The flying should be pretty much normal up until end of May which I think is when the first jets begin moving, flying will finish at the end of June the final flypast will be the week after St Dizier.

Hope that helps cheers

Thanks guys, apprciate the replies, I go to France fishing every year but aviation comes a close second, had a day off from the fishing last year and spent a really enjoyable afternoon at Reims, it is only about half an hour from where we are fishing, hoping to do the same this year.

Thanks

As per any case like this, aircraft normally:

a). Go into store
b). Used for spares then, Scrapped or used for targets.
c). Switched to other squadron to replace older (or less modified) aircraft (older aircraft replace go either as above i.e. a & b)
d). Go to museums, or public display, or sold to private collectors.

Previous recent French Airfield and Squadron closures, have followed the above, so it would seem almost certain the current round will follow the same route.

Regarding Reims it will close on June the 30th there will be a fly past of 12 Mirages in the shape of a cross, the F1Bs should have already left in the last week of May.

Some crews have already have gone so flying may now be limited, also there are 3 jets in Afganistan and 6 in Corsica.

Hope that helps you out.

Hi

Just to update you I have just emailed a French guy I know who spots at Reims and he now tells me the 12 Mirage flypast will only be 4 jets now.

Cheers

For any one going to Reims there are now only 12 Mirages left on base, so dont waist your time and effort getting there.
