Canon 50mm f/1.8?

Post by jg43 » Wed Nov 23, 2011 9:38 am

Hi guys. Have been looking into the Canon 50mm f/1.8 and wondering whether it's worth purchasing? Obviously the build quality is pretty shoddy as it is the cheapest and canon's range. Whats the image quality like though? Thought that this would be a good lens just to have in your bag and would add a different perspective to shooting in museums and in low light! If anyone has any images that they've taken with this prime I'd be greatful if you could post them here!!

Cheers :thumb:

hi mate, before i switched to Nikon, had a canon 60D,this lens although cheaply made, will give pin-sharp images.
really a good lens.you don't have the convienience of a zoom feature,so you will have to compose your shots with your feet :thumb:
my advice get one,you won't be disappointed.

I wouldn't say shoddy myself, I nearly bought a new one but was offered a 2nd hand 1.4 at a very good price so went for that. Pics through it are fine, as with any lens if you stop down the quality goes up unless you're specifically after a narrow depth of field or restricted by light levels but even at 1.8 it's a good lens. If your camera body is APS-C any 50 is a very good portrait lens, equivalent to 80mm.

Thanks for the feedback guys. Just bought a 7D but I like the idea of a prime with a low f/stop to enhance the depth of field!! Think it's going to have to be a purchase then :thumb:

Thanks again :thumb: :thumb:

I've got a 7D too and 50mm is a joy for portraiture and the low light stuff too, you really won't regret it, the 1.8 is a real bargain.

They also work with both Convertors event with the 2x the results and focus speed are not bad.
for the money its a cracking little prime fast lens with a great depth of field, very versatile great for portraits, and night shoots.
