Yes it's normal mate. My 70-200 f4 IS sounds like it is broken, I have used two or three of them now though and they all make the same racket!

Yes i always find the large Canon lenses noisy when the IS mode is on. You don't notice it when aircraft are about, but as soon as everything is quiet and you focus the lens on something, you think "what the hell's that noise!"

Yeah I have that same lens and yeah the IS makes quite a noise but its fine
