Nikon D7100 Upgrade

Post by Adam Palmer » Fri Apr 03, 2020 1:49 pm

Hi guys, i have been thinking of upgrading my D7100 and I am wondering if anyone has any recommendations, to work mainly with a sigma 150-500. Thanks in advance.

If you want to stay with Nikon and the DX format then the Nikon D500 would be the obvious choice. If your budget doesn't stretch to that then the D7500 is a very good alternative (think of it as a D500 lite). Both use the same sensor and have excellent autofocus.

I have used the D7100 and D7200 in the past and both are excellent cameras, but autofocus on the D500 & D7500 is noticeably better. Don't be concerned about the drop from a 24MP to a 20MP sensor, the difference is negligible. Also be aware that the D7500 only has one card slot and does not accept a battery grip. Having said that, I've never had a card failure since going digital many years ago, and only occasionally use a battery grip on the D500.

I've used to have a D700 years ago which is the same sensor as the D3. Nice camera for general stuff and a bit of aviation, the D3S would be better for action stuff as it has much better AF, but remember these 12MP cameras are from 2007 (2009 D3S) and technology has moved on leaps and bounds. Not saying theres anything wrong with them and they'll still take great images, but if you're usually at the top end of your reach and crop, an FX camera with 12MP might not be the correct choice these days. I still have a D4S, but that wouldn't be my first choice to go and shoot aviation, i'd take my D500

I have the D7200 and the D500 personally i get better results with the 7200 over the D 500.

In my honest opinion the D7100 doesn't require an upgrade.Yes the buffer is a little poor but it has a superb sensor and an excellent AF system.
The D7500 would be a backward step and is a very dumbed down D500.
If you have some money burning a whole in your pocket then do the sensible thing and spend it on glass.

For me, the best value for money camera out there is the Nikon D7200. I've had D7000, D7100, D7200, D7500 & D850. The D850 is slightly better than the D7200, especially with autofocus but it wants to be for 4x the price. I still bagged 95%+ sharp shots with the D7200 but then again, I don't spray and pray like some. The D7200 is a bit fragile i.e don't drop it. If my D850 ever packed up, I 'd likely go back to the D7200.

As for lenses, best value for aviation is the Nikon 200-500 f5.6. The sigma 18-35 f1.8 is good for wide angle and 50-100 f1.8 good for portrait. Both need tuning to get the best but they create fantastic images. I also had the Nikon 70-200 f4 which is super sharp but you can pick up a 2.8 on ebay for similar money. Skip the Mk1 and go Mk2+ if you do.

Good glass will make the biggest difference to how your images look now sensor technology has approached the limit of physics. Just my 2p. Take it for what it's worth.
