Sigma 50-500mm swap

Post by mdobuk21 » Sat Aug 31, 2019 10:47 am

Morning guys

I have a sigma 50-500mm but i find it frustrating sometimes when trying to autofocus quickly. It is also very heavy! I have seen a canon 100-400mm on ebay which i like. Do you guys think i would be better off with canon glass?

I have a canon eos 7d body

Cheers
Mark

I would say so, the longer the zoom range the more you are asking of the lens, I've always believed the shorter the zoom range the better, you'll be going from what is effectively a 10x zoom lens to a 4x.

I've seen some great results from the 100-400.

100-400 appears to be the aviation lens of choice as well.

The mk II Canon 100-400 is significantly better than the mk i at the 400 end of the range, I've owned both and am happy to use the mk ii with a canon 1.4 extender to give eq of 560mm.

A photo taken this morning at 560mm:

I had a similar experience with a Sigma lens of that type. I found it was to heavy, mine didn't have IS, which was a real drawback, and didn't really deliver especially when using lower f stops. I bought a canon 100-400 a couple of years ago, new, and wished I'd done it earlier. Got a nice 18-115 as well to cover the lower focal lengths and sold the sigma on ebay for a decent price.

Normally always the case the own camera manufacture lense will out perform a secondary make.

As said the Mkii on it’s own will preform much better than the Sigma, and the higher quality will allow you to crop in more afterwards, more or less regaining the loss in focal length and still probably leaving you a crisper image. Even when coupled with the 1.4 converter the loss is barely noticeable.
