Handy LENS

Post by Weazel69 » Tue Jul 09, 2019 12:30 pm

Just been looking at an Email sent to me by WEX
It concerns the launch of a New Lens by CANON
RF24 - 240 f.4/6.3 weighs 750gr and is priced at £899-

to me this sounds a very good lens to be hoiking around Airshows eg.IAT etc

Bit short though at 240mm I would have thought for anything flying.

oh I quite agree, but you know the score the bigger the lens the bigger the weight factor
trust me I know having owned a Sigma - 150/600.S lens and now having changed to the 60/600.S which is well layed out and easier to work with but it's those neck muscles

Hi Weazel
I think it is a handy size lens and would be ok for a day out at say Duxford, on a non airshow day etc. I is on the short side for RIAT but you could put a 1.4 or 2x converter on it. Tamron do a similar size which I was looking at recently on line. As for carrying the big Sigma round, i'm thinking of taking my Sigma 70-300 to RIAT this year and using a converter. My shoulders ached last year with the 150-500.

Cheers

Aren't Canon RF lenses only compatible with their new mirrorless bodies?

Yes they are - EOS R and EOS RP bodies. So not compatible with EF/EF-S mount.

If you want a good light zoom, with mid range.
You will not get much better then the Canon 70-200, L
Models.

it sounded a good idea when I first read it, but then a buddy of mine also mentioned the mirrorless which sort of popped the dream.so to speak
cannot you get an adaptor for the older Canon Bodies as I have a 5D Mk.III which is obviously full frame and I thought they were compatible

Seems you can get an adapter for EF lenses on R cameras but not vice versa.

Agreed. I've had one of these for years and if you get the f4, rather than the f2.8 version, it's not expensive either.

Sure it's a bit short on reach but it takes a good crop and was sharper for me with a large crop factor than when used with a 1.4 convertor, although I'm going back a few years now so maybe the convertors are better these days?

hi apex, had a 1.4 convertor myself a couple of years ago it was a Mk.II so therefore I thought it would be an improvement but I was wrong
hence therefore getting a longer focal lens

I think you are limited with converters with the L Lens. Think you need a Canon L series converter to make it work properly. It can get quite expensive. I know how highly the L lens's are rated, but then take into account the cost of the specialised converter on top and I personally have to question the cost against the use I would get out of them. Its just a question of evaluating the requirements.
