need help with camera settings
hi guys. i need help with my settings for canon its going to be for the duxford airshow in a couple weeks and 95% of the aircraft there will be prob aircraft what are the best settings for those to get prob blur. Also how do i get the best photos of after burners when i go to lakenheath i'm finding it really difficult to get good shots off them .
my camera gear is
-canon 7d (not the mark 2)
-canon 70-300mm L IS F4-F5.6
-canon 400mm F5.6 prime
if you have suggestions for a better camera im open to ideas the canon 7d is an old camera now and has it's limitations
thanks in advance

Re: need help with camera settings
I think the best place at Lakenheath for afterburner shots is from the track north of the runway just past the viewing area. When they are on runway 24 you can position your self so the afterburner is set against the dark background of trees and this time of year is great as the sun is north of the runway in the late afternoon. I start with normal metered exposure and then compensate , usually underexpose by a stop to bring up the burner - it really is just a case of taking lots of shots and Lakenheath is usually busy enough to give you several chances to get it how you like it. Plus it is a great place to just watch them blast out. (I don't bother but you can of course process the shot on your computer to high light the afterburner.)

alright thank you
Re: need help with camera settings
For prop aircraft just stick it in shutter priority mode and around 1/320 (you can go slower if you can hold it steady enough). Make sure you pan with the aircraft as well when taking the shot. I'd shoot in some sort of burst/continuous mode as well to try and up the number of good in focus shots.
Also, put it in continuous focus / servo mode (not sure what it's called on the Canon) so that it's always trying to focus as you are panning and shooting.

Oh and I wouldn't go spending money on a new camera until you can master the basics on this one... seems like a waste of money to me. But each to their own and it's your own money I suppose.

Re: need help with camera settings
hello thanks for the advice i will use those settings but do you think using a monopod is a good idea cause these prob aircraft won't be going any faster than 150 knots
and i will more than likely hold off on buying a new camera for the moment it's no rush i just don't like the noice that comes from my 7D
Re: need help with camera settings
Never used a monopod so can't comment on that. Always just hand held and never had problems.
You say you get noise from the 7D? Noise in the images (like film grain) or actual noise (audible) from the camera?

This is generally down to the ISO manually being set to high... do you have this on auto or have you accidentally set it high? Have you tried to manually set it lower and experiment? Does this only happen in certain conditions for you or is it all the time in all images?

for me its not that big off a deal i dont need to go higher than 1600 in most cases but if i am going to buy a new camera i might as well get one with good iso capability's aswell
Re: need help with camera settings
Out of interest why are you going so high on the ISO? I am normally around the 100-800 mark.

Re: need help with camera settings
my settings i use av at f8 and then to get higher shutter speed you up the iso so in alright sun light 1600 iso will get me 1/500 of a second which is normally enough on tv i use 1/800 but 1/500 works fine most off the time
Re: need help with camera settings
At Duxford you will find you need to work out where the light is in relation to your location and shoot down sun if possible. Prop blur in the air certainly no higher than 1/320, less with a steady hand. AI Servo is the focus mode on a Canon. Unless it's raining cats and dogs I won't normally go up beyond ISO 400 and while F8 is an ideal, don't get too hung up the odd stop either way will be fine.
Eagles soar, but Weasels don't get sucked in to jet engines.

Duxford is a pig to get right with the light there.

i'm normally end up around iso 200, 1/200th @ F10 ish on a bright day at duxford
