Nikon TC-14e ii teleconverter
Nikon TC-14e ii teleconverter
Alright chaps, I've been using said converter on a Nikon D7200 with a Nikon 300f4 prime. The converter worked perfectly for a few weeks but then the autofocus stopped working and the shutter will not engage even on manual focus.
Me being the tecnical wizard that I am decided it was a broken converter and to just buy a new one, new converter arrives but the same issue persists.
I've read that this converter works extremely well with that lens and it did for a while, could it just be that I have 2 broken converters or could the issue be deeper?

Re: Nikon TC-14e ii teleconverter
Does the camera/lens work without the teleconverter? If so, you could try cleaning the contacts on the camera, lens and converter.
Which version of the 300mm f4 do you have, as there could be a compatibility problem with the lens/converter combination. You say that you purchased a new converter, but the new version is the TC-14e iii which isn't compatible with older versions of the lens.

Yes the camera and lens work fine without the converters on, both the converters are the TC-14e ii version and the lens is the 300 f4 if-ed version, they are compatible with each other, I shall give the cleaning tip ago

Re: Nikon TC-14e ii teleconverter
I am a bit out of my comfort zone but is this something to do with AF-ON and back button focusing?

Edit : just noticed it works without the converter so forget what I just wrote above !
Wonder if the teleconveter is making the maximum aperture too narrow for autofocus?
I have a second hand TC-14E and not had a problem on my D3300 so far touch wood

Re: Nikon TC-14e ii teleconverter
Similar problem just popped up on Dpreview Nikon Pro Dx forum . Might be worth investigating..

Re: Nikon TC-14e ii teleconverter
Did you get to the bottom of this?
I am thinking of buying a second hand Nikon 300mm F4 lens
Is your lens a so-called grey import?

Re: Nikon TC-14e ii teleconverter
No I never got to the bottom of it unfortunately and ended up giving up and not using the converter, although I have only just seen the link above which is very interesting, I brought the lens second hand so have absolutely no idea if its a grey market import or not
Re: Nikon TC-14e ii teleconverter
I had the Nikon 300mm f/4D IF-ED and used it with the Nikon TC-14e ii a lot and never had any issues on the D7200, D300s and D5300 bodies.
Both lens and tele were sold and since then I've got another used TC-14e ii and the first gen Nikon 70-200mm f2.8 VR. Never had any issues with these and if reach isn't an issue this combo (70-200mm + 1.4 converter on the D500) is a killer combination in my opinion.

Re: Nikon TC-14e ii teleconverter
I also use a 70-200 f/2.8 plus a TC-14 ii converter on a D610 and I am very happy so far. Focusing is instant and no weird problems yet.
