Re: Rear Button Focussing for Aircraft
I think the focus mode you're using is more important? The back focussing button saves you having to hold the shutter button half way, which also locks the exposure assuming you're not in manual anyway. This will have an effect in the situation where you start to track an aircraft from a long way away i.e. it's realtively small in the frame with lots of backlight from the sky, and let it fly into the frame to fill it, so less backlight. In that situation I'd suggest using the back button in AI Servo.

I use it all the time (for everything I shoot)
In fact, my camera is now set up where the shutter button only controls the shutter
All focusing is done using the Rear button
Cheers!

Me too. At gigs it's invaluable, likewise weddings excepot portraits. I very rarely get to do any aviation photography so defer to those who shoot regularly.

Re: Rear Button Focussing for Aircraft
BBF is the way to go, it takes a bit of getting used to but that and AE-Lock are powerful buttons to have at ones command.
Re: Rear Button Focussing for Aircraft
Thanks to all for your responses, best get out and start practicing BBF
Cheers

Use BBF & AI-Servo mode all the time for Aircraft.
Takes a bit of getting used to but once you've got it very easy to do.
Practice Practice & Practice some more is my recommendation.
