From what i understand, bridge cameras have a lot of good qualities about them. Just don't expect them to do what an DSLR can.

Bridge cameras are good but are a compromise.
I used a Panasonic FZ45 for a couple of years, and obtained some good (if I say so myself, but check my flickr) results.
Yes you can get great shots with them. No you dont have to lug a heavy DSLR with lenses around....
BUT...
they are a compromise, and MUCH harder to use in practice than a basic DSLR to get that 'good' shot you want!
It all depends what you want or expect from the camera, and of course the budget.
For scenery or landscapes etc, great. But personally I would NOT recommend a Bridge for aviation shots.
Hope this helps.

I have a FZ200 and an FZ1000, the 1000 is excellent and can be set up to use back button focusing (which I like and use on my Canon 40d),
the 200 is very useful and I pretty much carry it wherever I go, has a better zoom range but smaller sensor and less manual functionality.

I agree ,pretty much, with what Tee Jay said and he highlighted the compromises. I use a Nikon L810 Bridge Camera. Very useful round museums and statics when you don't want to lug loads of kit around. However , it seems limited with moving shots (fast jets etc). However you can crop and edit with the camera, whereas I can't with the Canon DSLR. I do find the Canon easier and quicker to operate, until it comes to faffing about changing lenses lol.

If you are willing to buy a grey import, the lens of the Nikon Coolpix P600 is awesome.
I don't have one but two of my friends does and the results are impressive.

The successor to the P600 - the P610 is already available and on the market and is supposedly even better than the P600. I have not owned either one of them but if you do a Nikon P610 search on flickr you get a ton of images...

I have considered purchasing the Panasonic FZ1000 but i'm not sure how good it stands up with regards to fast moving aircraft. I didn't really want to go for another Bridge camera but i don't really want to lug lenses around everywhere i go (there is also the cost of the large telephoto lenses). The specs and general reviews make it sound very good i must say.
