Cannon V Nikon

Post by Saltheart » Mon Oct 26, 2015 9:48 am

Some advice please folks. Looking for a DSLR camera and lense for action photos at military bases and air shows. Considering Cannon 70D, 750D and Nikon 5500. Also for everyday use. Any thoughts and experiences gratefully received.

oh blimey.... good luck with that comparison!

I would advise going to a shop and trying both. Either manufacturer produces very capable cameras and lenses so its as much down to handling, menu systems and general 'feel' as anything else, and thats a very personal thing.
Its possibly fair to say that Canon is a bit more popular (including me).

Thanks
Ed

I guess you meant to type 700D instead of 70D as the 70D is in a slightly different bracket to the 750D

Thanks Ed....will be visiting shops soon to try out but am interested in what people prefer. I guess a fast AF is 1 pre-requisite. Andy - appreciate that Canon 70D is mid range rather than entry level like the others but there are some good deals around and it has a higher spec that could save the cost of a future upgrade. I've been impressed with the quality pics posted on FC using it.Would you consider it a better option for action photos? Thank you.

Thanks Ian, not the first and probably not the last to recommend it.

Hardly a fair comparison, 70D vs D5500!

Presumably you're already set on Canon if you're more interested in their higher lineup...

Not necessarily, if I plump for mid range a friend has suggested Nikon D7100. Won't go above this bracket. Research, view, decide then get best deal. Still in research mode. Haven't even thought about lenses yet!!

Rumours suggest there may be a new prosumer Nikon body lurking, an upgrade to the D300/ D300s, might be worth waiting a while?, it will probably sit somewhere between the D7100 and the D810.

I don't think Nikon needs to worry about competition from Cannon but they might be beaten by Canon

Whichever marque you decide to go with, the quality of the glass on the front is of equal if not greater importance. The best body in the world won't achieve much if you're using a lens with the optical quality of a milk bottle.

Sony lead the field at the moment. Forget your Canon and Nikon.
If you want a good body then Sony you need to look at.

I'm using a 70d & can't fault it, I may be considered biased though as I've had Canon kit since way back in the day of the AE1 & T70

7fps is fantastic for capturing the action, as mentioned don't forget the glass on the front.

My Canon 70-300 I know find somewhat lacking after upgrading from the 400D to the 70D, Lot's of pennies being saved now to replace with quality glass.

Its fair to say Sony have come on a lot, with sensor quality etc. As has been said though, what about lens quality?
Fair to say that Canon lead the field here? The likes of the 24-70II, 100-400II and 600II are difficult to beat.

In the context of the OP's query, care to suggest which of these field leading bodies you are actually recommending?

Personally I do not believe it is as simple as brand-x is better than brand-y. That all depends upon your own requirements. In my opinion at the entry level it does not matter really which brand you buy - and I would go with the philosophy that you should try 'em and buy the one that you like the feel of the best. At the end of the day price is likely to be a major determining factor anyway.

 Purchases made after 3 days solid graft researching, visiting camera stores and reading reviews. To summarise, being new to DSLR I plumped for entry level, a Canon 750D. It's an upgrade to 700D with 24mp sensor, faster engine and good AF qualities. A cracking deal on new from SLRHut. It is in a number of top 8 reviews. Found the best review site to be Techradar. Took your advice on lenses. The high end Canons came out very well but L series way outside budget. Their 70-300 non L lenses rate low on performance so passed up offer of telephoto kit lenses and their 70-300 USM IS black which is better but not as good as the new Tamron SP 70-300 DI VC USD. Although slightly more expensive than Canons it has had rave reviews and much better all round performance across tele range plus smooth and quick AF motor. Found a used one in mint condition on Camerajungle. You are probably aware of these sites and some of you may not support my choice but thought I would share with you anyway. Thanks again for your help.

Any lens you put on a sony as image stableisation, with the system built in to the body and not the lens.
so on a budget the Sony packs more features and plus' s then the others.
