Re: Anyone else dislike the "Togg" phrases?

Re: Anyone else dislike the "Togg" phrases?
Jem, you are right, our language is beautiful, to hear some of the knuckle draggers talking, foul mouthed kids (even young girls) makes me angry.
Is it a lack of education, upbringing, peer pressure or what
Ho hum, rant from this pensioner over,

Aaahh, banter . . . . a dish best served with a MASSIVE side order of brutality!!Mike wrote:Not to mention "brutal banter", a phrase that I am totally sick of - not to mention "Tiffie" (as mentioned before) - how do you get Tiffie out of Typhoon ?flat cap wrote:Probably used by the same people who over use the word 'banter'.

Re: Anyone else dislike the "Togg" phrases?
An interesting discussion with alot of great views. So I shall put across some of mine,
Firstly Tiffie - this has come about because of the WWII Typhoon which had the nickname Tiffie, so when the new Typhoon entered service, it was not a huge step for the nickname to follow.
As for preserving the English language - sorry guys, the English language has developed over hundreds of years and will continue to develop. Example as some of you hate abbreviations, I bet you all say e-mail? Well this is a shortened term of the correct Electronic Mail. This site uses PM for Private Messages, and other mainstream words VAT, Sqn, RAF, HUD, NHS, A2A, LGB? there are a lot of them in current life. Other words didn't exist fifty years ago, but are now in common use. Examples are Internet, goth, cotdeath, 24/7 etc
The shortening of words has transpired due to texting and Twitter, both limiting the user to 160 characters. Phonetic spelling has become the order of the day, and there is nothing wrong with it.
It is like comparing American English to UK English, both have developed in separate direction from a common starting point.
I agree that some of the language evolution goes too far, but this is a world that is getting smaller and smaller folks, technology is advancing at a colossal speed, language is only moving slowly.
For the baby boomers on here, think about the rad and cool words you had as a child? Some of these words have passed into history and are not recognised by the common children these days, but you guys used them a lot.
I'm going to get off my soap box now and run for cover!

I don't know where this phrase come from, it's suddenly arrived, and I agree it's annoying!Dunk wrote:However, 'Spluff' - I can not stand!

I did more than that in Gothenburg...Adam wrote:Yep, 'spluff' is annoying. Sounds suggestive like:
"Duncan 'spluffed' on the Viggen" for instance.

Re: Anyone else dislike the "Togg" phrases?
That's what I thought, but didn't want to say it in case I looked like more of an idiot than I already do if it was wrong

Re: Anyone else dislike the "Togg" phrases?
Not heard it in aviation related terms yet but I can't stand it when people state something is good as "SICK"! "That's sick" when I was at school if somebody said "that's sick" it generally ment disgusting....
Don't mind tiffie or tonka. Don't quite understand brutal banter either
