Canon fit lens for static displays?
Canon fit lens for static displays?
I have just switched from micro four thirds system to a Canon EOS 7D MKII and I have already purchased a Sigma 150-600mm C and also bought a Canon E-FS 10-22mm. I understand I can get away with using the 10-22mm for static displays but looking for a lens I can use for a general walk around and also use for static displays.
I have been looking at Canon EF 24-105 F/4 L IS II as a general walk around but not sure how it would fair static displays with the crop factor of the 7D MKII.
Thoughts, opinions or other suggestions would be much appreciated.

Re: Canon fit lens for static displays?
I would suggest looking at your existing images and checking your most commonly used focal length - in Lightroom this is a relatively straightforward task. From this you should be able to tell what new lens suits your needs best.
Re: Canon fit lens for static displays?
The sensor on the 7DII is APS-C so on an EF lens focal length is multiplied by 1.6 making the 24-105 actually 38 - 168. You'll have a gap between the 10-22 (EF-S so no crop factor) which I assume from your post you've realised. The 10-22 is a brilliant lens, very crisp. If you apply lens correction in Lightroom you can crop a fair amount with it. I had a 24-105 on my 7D and have to say found it limiting at the wide end, not wide enough. Have a look on MPB to see what's there.

Re: Canon fit lens for static displays?
I would go for either the Canon 16-35 F4 L, or Canon 17-40 F4L (I've got one or t'other but jiggered if I can remember which!). The 16-35 gets very good reviews, although it's nearly twice the price of the 17-40. At the very wide end (16/17) long aircraft can start to "Banana" - was always a problem with F-104's. However on a 1.6 crop sensor it's not too bad, and effectively gives you 25-60mm. With the possible exception of indoor Museum photography, F4 is plenty bright enough.
I have used a 24-105, but found it too long for static, and too short for flight line and runway shots. Zooms with more than about a 2:1 ratio tend to be less sharp at the extremities of their ranges.
The Canon 70-200 F4L is also a cracking runway/taxiway/approach lens (though no good for static), or if you can afford and put up with the extra weight the F2.8L.

Re: Canon fit lens for static displays?
I have the 7D ii and my walk around lens is the 24-105mm f4 which is suitable for most situations, I also have an old second hand 16-35mm f2.8 mark 1 non IS which is brilliant for tight shots at museums indoors. They are both very sharp and the 24-105mm works well on nightshoots if you turn off the stabilisation!
A cheap canon lens which produces excellent results is the Ef-S 55-250mm IS which I use when travelling and don’t need the reach of a 400mm.

Re: Canon fit lens for static displays?
My walk round lens is the very sharp, if stopped down to f8 or 11, Canon EF-S 15-85mm, as long as you don't push it to 15mm (barrel distortion issue) it's a great, sharp lens for the money. Can be picked up second hand for around £150 to £200
Re: Canon fit lens for static displays?
This is incorrect. Marking a lens in this way would be inaccurate - the focal length range of a lens doesn't change. Similarly, lenses for medium format and large format cameras are marked to the same scale as full frame DSLRs, so an 80mm lens on a Hasselblad 500 is considered a 'normal' lens much like a 40mm or 50mm on a full frame body.
So there is very little gap between a 10-22 and a 24-105 regardless of camera body.
Re: Canon fit lens for static displays?
You're correct in saying the focal length doesn't change, but the angle of view therefore relative focal length does with different sized sensors. Semantics really, all explained here.

However your last comment is incorrect. The EF-S lenses are specific to the APS-C cameras, the field of view at 22mm is a lot wider than the field of view of 24mm for an EF lens which is designed for a full frame (35mm equivalent) sensor. I used to have a 7D which is APS-C, the gap between the tight end on the 10-22 and wide end of the 24-105 was very noticeable. Once I got a 5D I could use the 10-22 on the 7D and 24-105 on the 5D and there was very little gap between them.

Re: Canon fit lens for static displays?
No, the angle of view of the same focal length lens on an APS-C body will be the same regardless of whether the lens is EF or EF-S.
You will indeed get a wider field of view from a 22mm than a 24mm, because it's a wider focal length, not because one is EF-S and one is EF. The 10-22 is equivalent to a 16-35 on a full frame body. The 24-105 becomes equivalent to a 38mm lens at the widest setting.

Re: Canon fit lens for static displays?
I really don't want to have a argumentative ping pong on this, but you're mixing terminologies. The 10-22 is EF-S, designed for APS-C cameras and will not fit on a full frame body whereas EF lenses fit full frame and crop frame. So saying the 10-22 EF-S equals a 16-35 EF doesn't stand up practically, but basically you are agreeing with what I said. Yes strictly speaking treating the lens alone the angle of view is the same, what changes is the image on the chip, it's cropped, and this effectively changes the field of view. So your last sentence "The 24-105 becomes equivalent to a 38mm lens at the widest setting." backs up what I've been saying. If the effective focal length is increased, the field of view therefore the angle of view is reduced.

Re: Canon fit lens for static displays?
Yes, EF-S will only fit crop sensor DSLRs, but the 1.6x crop factor still applies on EF-S lenses just as it does on EF lenses, unlike what you stated in your initial post.
By saying the 10-22 is equivalent to a 16-35 I'm saying that if your APS-C body was a full frame body, the angle of view you'd get with a 16-35 is almost the same as what you'd get with a 10-22 on an APS-C body.

"EF-S will only fit crop sensor DSLRs, but the 1.6x crop factor still applies on EF-S lenses just as it does on EF lenses" No it doesn't.

Re: Canon fit lens for static displays?
Yes it does, because, as I said, focal length markings are not changed to suit different sensor sizes!

Re: Canon fit lens for static displays?
Have a 7D and an R6 and have used them lots with the 24-70 F4 and there is never a perfect single lens but neither is unsuitable for static.
Re: Canon fit lens for static displays?
I'm a cheapskate - use a Canon 17 to 55mm f3.5 on my D7 Mk II.
Works fine for me on statics and general 'people/ urban' shots, musueums etc - cheap so not bothered if it gets knocked about.
(Also use a 55 to 250mm f5.6 to cover a longer range and a new 150 - 600 Sigma (bought 2019 for the cancelled 2020 / 2021 season) and used once - not that impressed so far maybe RIAT will make it work. The screw on the hood fell out on first use, nice)
Tokina 28mm f2.8 lens on my Olly Om2 still a laugh ...

Re: Canon fit lens for static displays?
If you're going to buy a 24-105 mm lens go for the Sigma ART version. Superior to the Canon equivalents
Re: Canon fit lens for static displays?
Just out of curiosity, why did you switch from M4/3 to Canon APS-C?

Re: Canon fit lens for static displays?
I used a Canon efs lens ,55-250 for static at fairford with great results. I recently sold my sigma 150-600 c,found it too heavy and performance disappointing. I now have the Canon 100-400 usm 2.
