AF-P DX NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3G ED VR
AF-P DX NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3G ED VR
Has anyone tried the AF-P DX NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3G ED VR lens yet.
I have the NIKKOR AFS70-300/4.5-5.6G IF VR ED which is 10 years old now and is back at Nikon for the second time this year for repair. It was always been very sharp and reliable but it may now be at the end of it's useful life.
I am a little reluctant to swap as the new lens will only work on one of my three bodies and secondly, the new one seems very cheap compared to what I paid for the current one. I have a D7100, D7000 and D300.
Your thoughts would be helpful.

yep mate I got that lens... its very good for the money, sharp and with quick autofocus its also very quiet. I have a D5300. I like the lens but I think I am going to get a longer lens because it hasn't quite got the reach I would like.

According to some reviews that lens won't work on the old D300

Also I think you would be moving from a FX lens to a DX lens which is why it is cheaper
Edit : it might be worth checking that the new technology AF-P lens works properly with your D7100?

Thanks guys, I know the new lens will not work with the D300 or D7000, it will work with the D7100 but only on Autofocus and VR as the Firmware on the other two cameras does not support these functions on the camera menu.
I already have a Nikkor fixed 300mm with a 1.4 converter which is brilliant. I have a Sigma 150-500mm OS but this is heavy and a bit soft in focus, so I need to have the smaller zoom in my bag.
All I am concerned about is, am I making a backward step buying this lens or should I be looking for another option?

Nikon's direct replacement for the old 70-300 lens that you have is the Nikkor 70-300mm f4.5-5.6E ED VR AF-P. It is an FX lens, so suitable for both FX and DX cameras - I use one on my D7200, D7500 and D500.
The only compatibility problem with your current cameras that I can see (I'm looking at the user manual now) is that the autofocus goes into standby mode after a set time, so if you have pre-focused on your subject you will need to re-focus. The manual specifically states that this is the case with the D300/D7000/D7100 that you have. Nikon did a firmware update for the D7200 to sort the problem, but I'm not sure if they did one for the D7100. I can't imagine it would be a problem in use as long as you are aware of it.
With regards to VR, it has the normal controls on the lens, so should work fine with your cameras.
The only other problem is that it costs considerately more than the DX lens! It is however a very good lens with excellent image quality, much better than the old 70-300 (which I also still have).

Thanks for that info, I'm glad you have actually hands on experience because there are so many opinions out there from people who have not actually used it.

Opinions ?
Only trying to help - you mentioned the DX version in the thread title which is a different lens to the FX version and much cheaper.

Why not go and rent one and get "hands on experience" yourself?

I could have worded that better, I appreciate all the responses, apologies for any offence.
Good idea... thanks!
