Yes, some great reminders of how good it used to be.
I was there on those days as well - taking movies rather than stills. When compared to the `G` and `H` models a B-52D departure was definitely the most impressive because of the distinctive sound they made on take off - can best describe it as a roaring, howling screech.

Brize hosted 5 of these `Maritime` B-52D deployments in 1980/81 involving the 7, 22 and 96BW's. Each Wing deployed 3 a/c for periods which varied from 5 to 22 days.

Nice set  . It looks like the VC-10 is waiting for the smoke to clear before lining up in the fifth photo.

Thank you for all your kind comments they have encouraged me to delve into my archive & dig out a few more.A story I was told at the time was that the red star just beneath the serial on the nose signifies that aircraft was credited with downing a Mig in the Vietnam conflict (you can see it on the last three photos),does anybody know if the story is true?
MIke did you also notice in photo 6 top left corner is a VC10 with a bird's-eye view?
Thanks again
Roger

Fantastic set of photo's ! I was lucky enough to have been there in air traffic but sadly remember very little of the flying. I do remember swapping bits of uniform with the Americans, there were loads of them. We even had females in our block, very unusual at the time !!

Managed to get a couple of shots with my trusty Kodak 110...remember them? Here's one of them.....not great

Image

Some years later I was involved with B52G's at St Mawgan on Harpoon trials.....had a better camera by then :)

Fantastic shots!
But it's a little painful for me to see these amazing D-models as I never saw them close in real life. I remember seeing four flying in formation over Holland more than 30 years ago, their enormous black tails clearly recognisable. When I was at Greenham Common in 1981I met my first B-52, but it was an H-model that was temp based at Marham. Years later I read that there were Ds at Brize at the same time. That still hurts. :'(
