USA April/May 1975

Post by Keflavik69 » Sat May 03, 2025 8:55 pm

This week it is 50 years ago that I went for the first time to the USA on a delayed honeymoon. Of course it wasn't a hobby trip but I managed to squeeze a few visits to airfields into our travel schedule focussed on National Parks and visiting friends in St.Louis and Denver. I have posted on this forum pictures of the stored aircraft at Davis-Monthan AFB before so I leave them out now.

Most definitely of interest, Arnold. Gee, what a selection of types. Some real gems there, but the camo T-29 is quite a novelty. Thanks for posting.

Regards, Terry.

Another fantastic selection, Arnold. They are most definitely interesting, especially the wonderful F-100s, Convairs, Thuds and the C-54!

Did your wife see you at all??
You managed a few base visits to get this collection
Changed days now, unfortunately.

Thanks Arnold, another amazing collection of shots, very nostalgic to view these, great variety especially the century fighters. How you managed this on a honeymoon too, on mine even the brief mention of maybe a visit somewhere resulted in a stern look. Luckily she's mellowed a bit now.

On my honeymoon, in 1987, we started at Leningrad and went south to 'The Stans'
In Tashkent, from our hotel room, I saw an AWACS-style IL-76 taking off.
No way would she let me even look at it through the longer lens! (She knew my finger might slip)
On about the 4th circuit, I did manage, but it was just a variation on a dot.
On checking, much later, there was more than one flying by then, unfortunately.

Fantastic Arnold! During my honeymoon in1989 these were all gone (except the A7). Centuryfighters with white codes were the best imo.

Arnold your post brought tears to this old mans eyes. So many memories of so many trips to the US, I had a great tour of Buckley when I was in Colerado on business, so many years ago! I know from PHANCON that your wife was not totally anti-aircraft!
All the very best old mate, regards, Gordon

Great stuff again Arnold ! Small correction, those HI F-105's are not F-105D's, but F-105B's (small black radome).

Blimey Arnold, WHAT a post!!! The quality of images, the content, and all taken with the consent of the recent Mrs Arnold, no doubt....I'm not sure I could have managed that  .
Many thanks for sharing, and as always....more please!

Right on the money and you've spoilt us as usual with another truly excellent post.
My first love are pistons and I was elated to firstly see the Dak then extatic when I reached the Sky master 😁
Once again, many thanks for sharing your superb captures and taking me back to a great time 👍
Best regards, Terry

Guys, thank you all for your nice comments.
eLaReF, regarding your comment and also Petepilot on previous comments I can only say "nothing beats British humour".
Retro, thank you very much for indicating the wrong type on the Hill F-105's. I learned something today.
Best regards,
Arnold

Great photos! I didn’t know the 170th TFS had RF-4Cs.

I also just noticed 62-4414 shown above, Arnold. She was “Ridge Runner” :). She ended up on the gate at R.E. Byrd airport.

Quite a collection, great catch on the Colorado Uni Voodoo. And I can never recall seeing a camo Convair before. Brilliant post.
