Upper Heyford Open House 1976

Post by MikeH » Wed Oct 30, 2024 1:47 pm

The Bicentennial show on the 3rd of July prior to Mildenhall on the 4th of July 1976. A bit of a meagre selection, possibly down to the way the static was arranged, the distance from the display line or more than likely due to my laziness regarding scanning. :halo: At the time the HAS shelters were under construction.

Thanks for sharing these, great shots and happy memories, plus the Summer of 1976 was pretty good weather as well. Nice to see some colour too, instead of predominantly grey. One typo regarding the Canadian Hooter, it's a CF-104 and not a CF-104D.

Apologies, I copied the information from the Scramble show report without thinking - now amended.

Was the CF-104D a twin stick?
Another wonderful set of scans, thanks for sharing :thumb:
Everyone has a photographic memory; some just don't have film.

Great post - I also went to it. Thought they did well to get the US Navy involved. The USS America also sent an A-6 and A-7 to the Mildenhall show held the next day. In fact, we were lucky to get this Upper Heyford show as it was held during a period of aerodrome reconstruction with only limited flying taking place. About 40 of the 20th TFW's F-111E's were deployed at Greenham Common for routine day to day flying April to August'76. During this time Upper Heyford normally opened up twice a week so a/c could be swapped with those at Greenham.

Fantastic post - loved Heyford and the ‘111s back in the day. This is a little before my time though as only 8 at the time

Great subjects and scans Mike - thanks for posting

Nice set. Particularly liking the Lightnings and the USN birds.
