Lossie 78-79 Hunters of 2 TWU

Post by toom317 » Mon Sep 16, 2024 7:56 pm

In September 1978 the RAF created a second TWU and based it at Lossie. The aircraft were all from Brawdy as far as I can remember. I can't recall seeing any Sqn markings on any of the 2 TWU aircraft, the single seater's all having a single letter tail code repeated on the nose nose door and the "T" birds having a two number code on the tail and nose door. The 4 ship shots were taken at a 2 TWU families day held in 1979, ( this also explains the bunting in previous posts of aircraft, that were present for that day). All the reggies should be good, but if anyone has a reg for the T7 coded "09" and the single seaters "G" and "Q" cicra 1979 I'd appreciate the info.

Wonderful, an all-time favourite of mine and many others. Loved viewing these and some are still around, I saw XG254 preserved at the Norfolk & Suffolk Aviation Museum at Flixton, still looking good. Thanks for sharing these with us.

Whereabouts on base did 2TWU operate from? I seem to remember that they shared ‘Echo hard’ and K20 Hangar with 849Sqn before taking it over when the Gannets left, but your pics suggest ‘Delta Hard’ and L27/28 Hangars?

Thanks for those reggies Mike I shall add them to the back of the pics.

Thunder, I don't recall them being over at 849. I can only remember them being on Delta hard, next to 8 Sqn's pan. They used the hangars behind there but I can't remember their numbers.

Thunder, I'm having trouble visualizing it from memory, but I think you may be right that they shared 849's area for a while before moving over to the other side of the airfield.
