Appeal for pic of Gulf War nose art on Nimrod XV244

Post by F3 » Tue Jan 23, 2024 3:36 pm

I have just completed an article on the history of the recently reformed 42 (R) Sqn. and am trying to source a pic of the nose art on this a/c which read Battle Star 42. During its deployment @ Seeb, Oman it was credited with 4 ship kills
I've never seen a pic of this so it's a bit of a long shot, but if you don't buy a ticket....

Hi F3, i believe the picture you are looking for is in the RAF Gulf War Yearbook special, you should be able to download it for free from docdroid.

Thanks for the info. I do have a copy which I'll dig out and check but I can't remember ever seeing it.

Hi, a quick Google search led to this photo which shows the artwork: https://www.dstorm.eu/pictures/nose-art ... star_1.jpg

Thanks for the heads up 1MT. Your powers of observation are remarkable. Have had that publication for many years but failed to notice that pic. Obviously been focussed on the sexier nose art on the fast jets. It is a scan of part of that pic which mancman has found on the net and is not particularly good quality. I have done a better one which I think is usable if the editor of the Lossie station mag elects to use it as they have welcomed my article. As the mag is entirely on-line I will provide the link when the article appears so that those who are interested can read it. I gather that 42(R) Sqn. maybe adding to it by providing an update of their current activities which we got a glimpse of in the last episode of the recent CH5 series.

According to the RAF website, there is no reserve (R) in the squadron designation, see here:
https://www.raf.mod.uk/news/articles/nu ... ssiemouth/

The RAF dropped the (R) designation several years ago.
