Dunsfold Wings n Wheels 2005 Airside

Post by bvs » Mon Jan 08, 2024 1:43 pm

Apologies for not posting much recently - been a lot going on in life !

To celebrate the 21st anniversary of the first flight of Hawk XX154 we were invited to take XX154 to the 2005 WnW event, since I lived just down the road and was an ex Dunsfold fitter my boss kindly let me look after the old girl for the weekend :)

Trundling over towards the runway early morning, behind the super modern tractor :)

My next door neighbour with his lovely Harvard which he displayed very nicely - thanks Phil :)

Just remembered - in spite of the tractor drivers assurance that he would be around on the monday morning to tow the a/c out of the hangar,I made sure I knew where the tractor was parked and also how to start it (there was something a little odd about starting it but cannot remember what) - it was a real heap of cr@p - only 1 working brake and only had towing eye on the front end (ooh me neck :) ) - anyway nobody turned up so......
It was the first time I had towed an a/c for 22 years :)

Nice set from another sadly discontinued show at a doomed venue! This event invariably had some unique formation or display item not seen elsewhere. Well worth attending every year it was held for a great Day-out. :thumb:

The first image, classic pose of the tractor driver looking back down the taxiway, keep expecting to see a Lightning nose diving towards the beer tent in the background?
Everyone has a photographic memory; some just don't have film.

Many thanks Supra,it was always a great day out - although I actually only ever made it once - there is absolutely no truth in the rumour that I only went in 2005 because I didnae have to pay for entry :)
Although of course I did attend a few families days there when an employee :)

Just a few more shots - please bear in mind I only had a 3.1 megapixie Fuji pocket camera at the time :)

Round the 'Hammerhead' - almost as fast as the Stig :)

And on to the old Flight Line...

Dak parked on the disused secondary runway, note the remains of the Tar and Wood Chippings in the foreground which were used to 'tone down' the concrete very light/bright colour when new.

Just noticed from your 4th shot /second batch how this event grew in popularity between your visits & the final Event? So few people watching the Sea Fury on what was (for the UK.) a fine summer Day? :O

Hi Supra
Sorry cannot comment on crowds as I never made it back for another WnW,from memory it was a fairly long crowd line.
I really must sort out a few photos of previous Dunsfold 'Family Day' aircraft - of course that takes me into pre digital territory :)
