1973 Luxembourg

Originally I intended to post a survey of what I photographed in a year as is done by other Fightercontrol members in the Current Photo Section at year-end, but in my case for 1973. Going through the remainder of my slide-scans from that year I noticed I had a considerable amount of slides taken at Luxembourg airport. In 1973 I lived for 6 months in Luxembourg for study. In those days there was a NATO depot in the country, resulting in regular visits of various NATO transport aircraft. The cargo ramp at Luxembourg airport was very spotter-friendly in those days. I hope you enjoy the transporters.

Stunning as usual. The Finnish Magisters are my favourite, purely because of the ac in the background with the split tail ..... CL-44?????

Thanks Arnold, I can honestly say that they are of interest and a great selection of shots, I think anyone who views these will agree with me. I did see a couple of Italian C-119s long ago, acting as support aircraft for display items at Biggin Hill. Those Finnish Magisters were very rare outside that country and I do have a book about the type in Ilmavoimat service. It details the very occasional overseas visits the type made. I know it's a civil type, but nice to see the Cargolux CL-44, with the swing tail lurking in the background. All great stuff and thanks once again for sharing these with us.

A wonderful selection of transports from the good old days, Arnold. Nice to see the Danish C-47s and C-54s, which were regular visitors to Lossie.

Arnold... what can I say except "thanks for the memories"... they are great with the ramp access you presumably had. I would have seen a lot of the transport types as they arrived at Northolt during Farnborough Show week back in the days of British aviation manufacturers bringing the NATO bosses.

Regarding the Finnish Magisters, I've been into the archives and have found the Finnish Magister book.
For information, Ilmavoimat operated 80 Magisters, FM-1 to FM-18 were French built and were delivered by air via various routes, I know that some went through Gutersloh. There was never an FM-19 or FM-20. Valmet built under license 62 aircraft, these being FM-21 to FM-82. The two aircraft shown at Luxembourg were either en route to or returning from a visit to San Javier in Spain. Before selecting the Magister, Ilmavoimat evaluated the Jet Provost (G-AOHD) which was flown by at least ten Finnish pilots. After selecting the Magister, the Miles Student G-APLK (XS941) also did a demonstration tour of the Nordic countries. As far as I can see, there were only four visits by the type out of Finland.

Ah, the Miles Student!!. What a pretty aircraft!. Only one built. Destroyed in a take-off accident at Duxford, I believe. Lovely pictures.

First of all I would like to thank you for your very nice comments.
I don’t know where the Finnish Magisters were going to or coming from. But I saw 3 years earlier 2 of them at Colmar-Meyenheim on the 31st of August, the same time of the year. They were in Colmar to participate in a military sports competition where also Danish T-33’s en Swedish Lansens participated. So I presumed they were for the same reason on the way.
Mije@heathrow, I did not have ramp acces. The cargo ramp was open and I could photograph (almost) all aircraft by standing at the edge of the ramp. I would have loved to have ramp access so I would have a better picture of the Italian C-119.

raptor9, you'll be pleased to know that the Miles Student still exists. After it's accident in 1985 it moved to a couple of locations. It can now be found at the Museum of Berkshire Aviation at Woodley, near Reading.

Wow! Lovely images Arnold of a bygone age. Seems odd that as I was starting out on the hobby these were considered the front line aircraft. Now virtually all are museum pieces! But great memory jerkers.
