Nice bit of nostalgia, Reminds me how old I am - I was 33 in 1984! Makes me think I should get around to posting my shots from the 1982 Air DayNickB wrote: ↑Mon Nov 27, 2023 9:49 amHaving attended the post Falklands '82 show (I was only 10), I remember eagerly awaiting for weeks to go to this show. We drove up from Helston on the Friday morning (should have been an early start... another story) in my Dads' friends Sherpa van (the same we went to the IAT 83 in), arriving at Yeovilton early afternoon. Back then getting out of Cornwall was quite a journey, with many chunks of the A30 still single carriageway - hard to believe now!
Stand out memories are of lots going on - fast jets, helos, the lot! However one standout memory was Ken Lamprey's arrival in Gannet 3 XL500 from Culdrose - wow - did he throw that aircraft around, with some steep wing-overs and that lovely sound of the Double Mamba! I was always a Gannet fan.
On the day of the air show I can also recall a massive downpour late afternoon where my cousin and I sheltered under the wing of a Canberra and then trudging back to the Sherpa van across the freshly mowed VL sports pitch, grass clippings sticking to my trainers, only to be berated by Ernie, my Dad's friend for bring grass into the van... I was only 12!
84 was a good show as can be seen from these superb pics (thanks) - but for me it lacked the sparkle of the 82 show and of course I was still in awe of the final IAT at Greenham Common in 83!
Recalling these memories makes me feel a little melancholy thinking about what has become of the air show scene in the UK now and how quiet places like Yeovilton have become.
